Uncharitableness

Uncharitableness is the sin of harsh judgment and lack of mercy toward others. Scripture warns against critical, censorious attitudes that fail to extend grace.

Overview

Jesus repeatedly taught His followers to examine their own hearts before judging others. Uncharitableness—manifested through harsh judgment, gossip, and lack of mercy—grieves the Spirit and contradicts the gospel of grace we have received. God calls believers to extend the same compassion and forgiveness we have experienced in Christ.

Key Scriptures

"Judge not, that you be not judged. For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and with the measure you use it will be measured to you" (Matthew 7:1-2, ESV).

"Why do you see the speck that is in your brother's eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye?" (Matthew 7:3, ESV).

"Judge not, and you will not be judged; condemn not, and you will not be condemned; forgive, and you will be forgiven" (Luke 6:37, ESV).

Application

Before criticizing another believer, humbly examine your own heart and extend the same mercy and grace that Christ has shown you.
