23 Instead, you have exalted yourself against the Lord of heaven. The vessels from His house were brought to you, and as you drank wine from them with your nobles, wives, and concubines, you praised your gods of silver and gold, bronze and iron, wood and stone, which cannot see or hear or understand. But you have failed to glorify the God who holds in His hand your very breath and all your ways.

Study Notes — Daniel 5
5 sectionsDaniel chapter 5 presents one of Scripture's most dramatic moments of divine judgment. King Belshazzar, in his pride and arrogance, desecrates the sacred vessels from God's temple during a lavish banquet and simultaneously mocks the God of Israel by worshipping idols. In response, God sends a supernatural sign—a disembodied hand writing judgment upon the palace wall—which none of the king's wise men can interpret. Daniel, now elderly but still faithful, is summoned to read the inscription, and he delivers a message of certain doom: the king has been weighed and found wanting, and his kingdom will be given to the Medes and Persians. This account illustrates the imminent justice of God upon those who persist in rebellion, even when they have witnessed His power firsthand.
Belshazzar hosts an enormous banquet for a thousand nobles, and in a fit of drunken hubris, he orders the sacred golden and silver vessels from the Jerusalem temple brought forth so that he and his court may drink wine from them while praising their man-made gods of gold, silver, brass, iron, wood, and stone (v. 2-4). This act represents deliberate mockery: he knows these vessels were dedicated to the God of Israel, yet he uses them in worship of lifeless idols. At that very moment, a supernatural hand appears and writes upon the palace wall in full view of the king (v. 5). The visible fingers of this mysterious hand terrify Belshazzar—this is God's judgment made manifest before his eyes.
Application: Belshazzar's sin reveals how pride blinds us to consequence. He had inherited knowledge of God's power through his father Nebuchadnezzar's humiliation (v. 22), yet he ignored the lesson. We too must guard against spiritual complacency and the assumption that we can mock God without answer.
Terror seizes Belshazzar; his face pales and his limbs weaken (v. 6). He summons his astrologers, Chaldeans, and soothsayers, offering them wealth, honor, and high political position if they can read and interpret the writing (v. 7). Despite their reputation and the king's urgent promises, none of them can read it (v. 8). The king's distress deepens, and his lords share his confusion (v. 9). It is the queen (likely the king's mother or a widow from Nebuchadnezzar's household) who breaks the silence, recommending that Daniel—the aged prophet who once served under Nebuchadnezzar—be summoned (v. 10-12). She testifies that Daniel possesses the spirit of the holy God, understanding beyond human wisdom, and a proven track record in interpreting mysteries.
Application: Human wisdom fails before God's truth. The world's experts and counselors are powerless against divine revelation. Only God's messenger, Daniel, can bridge the gap between the human and the divine.
Belshazzar treats Daniel with formal respect, acknowledging his reputation (v. 13-16). Daniel declines the king's offered rewards, stating that he will interpret the writing freely (v. 17). He then delivers a sobering history lesson: Nebuchadnezzar was given dominion by the Most High God, but when pride lifted his heart, God humbled him terribly until he acknowledged God's sovereignty (v. 18-21). Daniel confronts Belshazzar directly: despite knowing this history, he has not humbled his heart (v. 22). Instead, he has lifted himself against the Lord of heaven, desecrated His vessels, praised worthless idols, and failed to glorify the God who holds his very breath in His hand (v. 23). Because of this willful rebellion, the hand has been sent to write his judgment (v. 24).
Application: Daniel models faithful witness even before a hostile king. He refuses compromise and speaks truth with both clarity and gravity, honoring God above personal safety or advancement.
The writing reads: MENE, MENE, TEKEL, UPHARSIN (v. 25). Daniel interprets it: God has numbered Belshazzar's kingdom and brought it to an end; he has been weighed in God's balances and found deficient; and his kingdom will be divided and given to the Medes and Persians (v. 26-28). That very night, Belshazzar is slain, and Darius the Mede takes the kingdom (v. 30-31). God's Word proves absolutely reliable: the sentence was executed immediately.
Application: God's judgment is certain and cannot be delayed or negotiated. The lesson cuts both ways: blessing for the faithful and swift judgment for the defiant.
In our contemporary age, many believe they can live in conscious rebellion against God without consequence. Daniel 5 reminds us that God's character does not change. He is patient and merciful, but He is also
