Chapter Commentary — Daniel 11
Chapter Overview

Overview

Daniel chapter 11 presents one of Scripture's most detailed prophecies of future kingdoms and their conflicts. The angel Gabriel continues his revelation to Daniel, foretelling the rise and fall of Persian and Greek empires, and culminating in a figure of unprecedented hostility toward God's people and His covenant. While the early sections describe historical dynasties with remarkable accuracy, the passage ultimately points beyond mere earthly politics to spiritual warfare and God's sovereign control over all nations. This chapter demonstrates that history unfolds according to God's predetermined plan, and that His people can trust Him even when earthly powers seem overwhelming.

Verses 1-5: The Angel's Commission and the Rise of Persian Kings

Gabriel begins by reminding Daniel of his role supporting Darius the Mede (v. 1). He then announces that three more Persian kings will arise, followed by a fourth who will be far wealthier and more powerful, stirring up the Greek empire (v. 2). This corresponds historically to the succession of Persian monarchs culminating in Xerxes. Verse 3 introduces "a mighty king" who will rule with great dominion—Alexander the Great—who will establish his vast empire according to his own will. However, verse 4 reveals the crucial limitation: when Alexander dies, his kingdom will be divided among four generals, not inherited by his descendants. This fulfilled prophecy demonstrates God's foreknowledge and reminds us that human power, however impressive, is temporary and subject to divine purposes.

Application: How do we respond when powerful earthly rulers seem unchecked? Daniel's vision reassures us that no empire lasts forever. God's throne remains sovereign over all thrones.

Verses 5-19: The Wars Between North and South

The "king of the south" (Egypt) and "king of the north" (Syria under the Seleucids) emerge from Alexander's divided empire. These verses trace their conflicts with remarkable historical precision. A political marriage alliance (v. 6) fails to bring peace. Verses 7-9 describe Egyptian military success, while verses 10-13 show the northern king's eventual resurgence. Verses 14-15 reveal that during these conflicts, "robbers of thy people" (lawless Jews) will rise up, yet they will fall. The northern king will conquer the "glorious land" (Israel/Judea), and none can withstand him (v. 15). By verse 16-19, this northern king—historically Antiochus III—briefly appears invincible but ultimately "stumbles and falls" mysteriously.

Application: Even when worldly powers oppose God's people, their triumph is never permanent. God uses history itself to fulfill His purposes and protect His covenant community.

Verses 20-35: The Rise of Antiochus IV Epiphanes

Verse 20 introduces a "raiser of taxes" who is quickly destroyed—a historical reference to Seleucus IV. Then appears a "vile person" (v. 21) who obtains power through flattery and deception: Antiochus IV Epiphanes. This tyrant breaks covenants (v. 22-23), conquers wealthy provinces, and schemes against fortified cities (v. 24). Verses 25-27 describe failed military campaigns and a king whose heart turns toward evil. Most significantly, verses 28-31 reveal his ultimate target: "his heart shall be against the holy covenant" (v. 28). He will "pollute the sanctuary of strength, take away the daily sacrifice, and place the abomination that maketh desolate" (v. 31)—exactly what occurred in 168 BC when Antiochus desecrated the Jewish Temple. Yet verses 32-35 offer hope: though many faithful Jews fall by sword and flame (the Maccabean persecution), "the people that do know their God shall be strong, and do exploits" (v. 32). The righteous will be purified like gold refined in fire (v. 35).

Application: Persecution tests and purifies faith. God's people may suffer temporarily under hostile powers, but their suffering serves a sanctifying purpose and does not thwart God's ultimate plan.

Verses 36-45: The Ultimate Antichrist Vision

Beginning at verse 36, the prophecy appears to transcend the historical Antiochus and point toward an ultimate eschatological figure—a final, blasphemous king who exalts himself above all gods and speaks "marvellous things against the God of gods" (v. 36). This figure honors "the God of forces" (v. 38) and will not regard his fathers' gods or show natural human affection (v. 37). He conquers many lands, including Egypt, but is troubled by news from the east and north (v. 44). Finally, he plants his palace "between the seas in the glorious holy mountain" and comes to his end with none to help him (v. 45). Many scholars recognize here a dual prophecy: the immediate historical type (Antiochus) foreshadows the final antichrist figure described in Revelation 13.

Application: History's trajectory moves toward Christ's ultimate victory. Every earthly power that opposes God will ultimately fall before the King of kings.

Application for Today

Daniel 11 teaches us that God orchestrates human
