Study Notes — Revelation 11
5 sectionsRevelation 11 presents one of Scripture's most dramatic and mysterious prophecies: the ministry and martyrdom of two end-times witnesses. In the midst of cosmic upheaval and spiritual conflict, John is instructed to measure the temple while observing the rise of two prophets who will boldly proclaim God's truth during the final days of tribulation. This chapter emphasizes both the certainty of God's protection over His people and the reality of opposition they will face, culminating in their vindication through resurrection and the triumphant proclamation that Christ's kingdom will reign forever.
An angel gives John a measuring reed and commands him to measure the temple of God, the altar, and those who worship there. However, he is instructed to omit the outer court, which is given to the Gentiles who will trample the holy city for forty-two months. This passage likely symbolizes the protection and preservation of God's true church (the inner temple) during a period of external persecution and worldly dominion. The forty-two months (also expressed as 1,260 days in verse 3) appears throughout Revelation as a definite, divinely limited period of tribulation. God does not measure what He will abandon; this act signifies His care and custody over His remnant even amid hostility.
God grants power to two witnesses who will prophesy for 1,260 days clothed in sackcloth—symbols of mourning and urgent proclamation. They are identified as "two olive trees and two candlesticks standing before the God of the earth" (verse 4), echoing Zechariah's vision and suggesting they represent God's light and provision. These witnesses possess extraordinary authority: they can call fire upon their enemies (verse 5), shut heaven from rain, turn water to blood, and inflict plagues (verse 6)—powers reminiscent of Moses and Elijah. While their identities are debated among believers, their function is clear: to testify boldly to God's truth and power during the darkest hours of human rebellion against Him.
After completing their testimony, the beast from the bottomless pit wages war against them, defeats them, and kills them (verse 7). Their bodies lie exposed in "the great city, which spiritually is called Sodom and Egypt, where also our Lord was crucified" (verse 8)—Jerusalem, representing a place that has rejected God's messengers. For three and a half days, people from every nation gaze upon their corpses with glee, refusing proper burial (verses 9-10). Yet in a stunning reversal, the Spirit of life from God enters them, they stand to their feet, and a voice calls them to "come up hither" (verses 11-12). Their enemies watch helplessly as they ascend into heaven in a cloud. This resurrection vindication declares that no earthly power can ultimately silence God's witnesses.
The resurrection triggers a great earthquake that destroys a tenth of the city and kills 7,000 people. Those remaining are terrified and give glory to God (verse 13). The seventh trumpet then sounds, announcing that the kingdoms of this world have become Christ's kingdom forever (verse 15). The twenty-four elders fall in worship, acknowledging God's power and reign, and declare that the time has come for judging the nations, rewarding the saints, and destroying those who destroy the earth (verses 16-18). The passage closes with the opening of heaven's temple, revealing the ark of the covenant and accompanied by cosmic disturbance—signifying God's final vindication and the establishment of His eternal order (verse 19).
Revelation 11 assures believers that God measures and preserves His people regardless of cultural hostility or persecution. We are called to prophesy boldly—to speak God's truth in sackcloth, mourning the world's rebellion while confidently proclaiming Christ's return. Though opposition is real and suffering may come, ultimate victory belongs to God and His kingdom. Our risen Lord is already ascending to the throne; our duty is faithful witness until He comes.
