1 Then the fifth angel sounded his trumpet, and I saw a star that had fallen from heaven to earth, and it was given the key to the pit of the Abyss.

2 The star opened the pit of the Abyss, and smoke rose out of it like the smoke of a great furnace, and the sun and the air were darkened by the smoke from the pit.

4 They were told not to harm the grass of the earth or any plant or tree, but only those who did not have the seal of God on their foreheads.

5 The locusts were not given power to kill them, but only to torment them for five months, and their torment was like the stinging of a scorpion.

20 Now the rest of mankind who were not killed by these plagues still did not repent of the works of their hands. They did not stop worshiping demons and idols of gold, silver, bronze, stone, and wood, which cannot see or hear or walk.

This chapter reveals both the severity of God's judgment and the stubbornness of human hearts apart from His grace.
John sees a star fall from heaven and receive the key to the bottomless pit—this "star" represents an angelic being (likely a fallen angel or demon given the context). When the pit opens, smoke rises like a furnace, darkening the sun and air. From this smoke emerge locusts with scorpion-like power. The critical detail in verse 4 is that these creatures are forbidden to harm the grass, plants, or trees, but only those without God's seal on their foreheads. This demonstrates God's sovereignty and protection over His own. The sealed believers—those who have trusted Christ—remain untouchable, while unbelievers experience demonic torment for five months.
The description of these plague-locusts is deliberately grotesque: they resemble horses prepared for war, with crowns, human faces, women's hair, lions' teeth, and iron breastplates. Their wings sound like chariots charging into battle. This hybrid imagery emphasizes their supernatural, demonic nature—they are not natural locusts but manifestations of spiritual evil.
