To Ezra the priest, the scribe of the Law of the God of heaven: Greetings. 13I hereby decree that any volunteers among the Israelites in my kingdom, including the priests and Levites, may go up with you to Jerusalem. 14You are sent by the king and his seven counselors to evaluate Judah and Jerusalem according to the Law of your God, which is in your hand. 15Moreover, you are to take with you the silver and gold that the king and his counselors have freely offered to the God of Israel, whose dwelling is in Jerusalem, 16together with all the silver and gold you may find in all the province of Babylon, as well as the freewill offerings of the people and priests to the house of their God in Jerusalem. 17With this money, therefore, you are to buy as many bulls, rams, and lambs as needed, together with their grain offerings and drink offerings, and offer them on the altar at the house of your God in Jerusalem. 18You and your brothers may do whatever seems best with the rest of the silver and gold, according to the will of your God. 19You must deliver to the God of Jerusalem all the articles given to you for the service of the house of your God. 20And if anything else is needed for the house of your God that you may have occasion to supply, you may pay for it from the royal treasury. 21I, King Artaxerxes, decree to all the treasurers west of the Euphrates: Whatever Ezra the priest, the scribe of the Law of the God of heaven, may require of you, it must be provided promptly, 22up to a hundred talents of silver, a hundred cors of wheat, a hundred baths of wine, a hundred baths of olive oil, and salt without limit. 23Whatever is commanded by the God of heaven must be done diligently for His house. For why should wrath fall on the realm of the king and his sons? 24And be advised that you have no authority to impose tribute, duty, or toll on any of the priests, Levites, singers, doorkeepers, temple servants, or other servants of this house of God. 25And you, Ezra, according to the wisdom of your God which you possess, are to appoint magistrates and judges to judge all the people west of the Euphrates—all who know the laws of your God. And you are to teach these laws to anyone who does not know them. 26If anyone does not keep the law of your God and the law of the king, let a strict judgment be executed against him, whether death, banishment, confiscation of property, or imprisonment. 27Blessed be the LORDיְהוָ֖הYah·weh — The LORD; God's covenant nameH3068 — Full Word Study →, the Godאֱלֹהֵ֣י’ĕ·lō·hê — God, the divine beingH430 — Full Word Study → of our fathersאֲבוֹתֵ֑ינוּ’ă·ḇō·w·ṯê·nū — H1 — Full Word Study →, whoאֲשֶׁ֨ר’ă·šer — who, which, that; when, where, becauseH834 — Full Word Study → has putנָתַ֤ןnā·ṯan — to give, grant, or bestowH5414 — Full Word Study → into the heartבְּלֵ֣בbə·lêḇ — Heart; the center of emotion, will, and intellectH3820 — Full Word Study → of the kingהַמֶּ֔לֶךְham·me·leḵ — A male ruler or sovereign who governs a nation or kingdomH4428 — Full Word Study → to so honorלְפָאֵ֕רlə·p̄ā·’êr — to beautify, adorn, or glorifyH6286 — Full Word Study → the houseבֵּ֥יתbêṯ — A house; dwelling place; household; familyH1004 — Full Word Study → of the LORDיְהוָ֖הYah·weh — The LORD; God's covenant nameH3068 — Full Word Study → in Jerusalemבִּירוּשָׁלִָֽם׃bî·rū·šā·lim — City of peaceH3389 — Full Word Study →, 28and who has shownהִטָּה־hiṭ·ṭāh- — to stretch out, extend, incline, bendH5186 — Full Word Study → meוְעָלַ֣יwə·‘ā·lay — upon, over, against; concerningH5921 — Full Word Study → favorחֶ֗סֶדḥe·seḏ — Covenant loyalty and steadfast kindnessH2617 — Full Word Study → beforeלִפְנֵ֤יlip̄·nê — face; presence; beforeH6440 — Full Word Study → the kingהַמֶּ֙לֶךְ֙ham·me·leḵ — A male ruler or sovereign who governs a nation or kingdomH4428 — Full Word Study →, his counselorsוְיֽוֹעֲצָ֔יוwə·yō·w·‘ă·ṣāw — to advise, counsel, or devise a planH3289 — Full Word Study →, and allוּלְכָל־ū·lə·ḵāl- — All, every, whole, totalityH3605 — Full Word Study → hisהַמֶּ֖לֶךְham·me·leḵ — A male ruler or sovereign who governs a nation or kingdomH4428 — Full Word Study → powerfulהַגִּבֹּרִ֑יםhag·gib·bō·rîm — mighty man, warrior, strong heroH1368 — Full Word Study → officialsשָׂרֵ֥יśā·rê — Ruler, leader, or one in authorityH8269 — Full Word Study →. Chapter Commentary — Ezra 7
Chapter Overview

Chapter Overview

Ezra chapter 7 marks a pivotal moment in the return of God's people to Jerusalem. About sixty years after the first group of exiles returned under Zerubbabel, Ezra himself arrives with a fresh mandate to restore spiritual order and teach the law of God. The chapter opens with Ezra's impressive priestly lineage and closes with King Artaxerxes' extraordinary decree granting extensive resources and authority for the rebuilding of the temple and the establishment of proper worship. This passage demonstrates God's sovereign hand providentially working through pagan rulers to accomplish His purposes for His covenant people.

Verses 1–6: Ezra's Identity and Calling

The genealogy (verses 1–5) establishes Ezra's impeccable credentials as a descendant of Aaron, the chief priest. Tracing back through Phinehas, Eleazar, and Aaron himself, the text demonstrates that Ezra came from the highest priestly stock. This was not incidental; it gave him spiritual authority and legitimacy among the people. Verse 6 provides the key characterization: Ezra was "a ready scribe in the law of Moses." The Hebrew word for "ready" suggests he was skilled, prepared, and thoroughly competent. More importantly, his knowledge came from the law given by "the LORD God of Israel." The remarkable statement that "the king granted him all his request" reveals divine providence—God was moving the heart of a pagan monarch to support His purposes (compare Proverbs 21:1). Spiritually, this shows us that when we are committed to God's Word and prepared for His calling, He opens doors in unexpected ways.

Verses 7–10: The Journey and Ezra's Heart Preparation

A diverse company traveled with Ezra: priests, Levites, singers, porters (gatekeepers), and temple servants (Nethinims). The journey took four months (from the first month to the fifth month, verse 9), and verse 9 attributes their safe arrival to "the good hand of his God upon him." This is a refrain throughout Ezra, emphasizing God's protection and provision. Verse 10 reveals the spiritual foundation of Ezra's mission: "Ezra had prepared his heart to seek the law of the LORD, and to do it, and to teach in Israel." Notice the three-fold progression—seeking, doing, and teaching. This is the biblical model for spiritual leadership: before we teach others, we must first study God's Word and practice it ourselves. Ezra's heart preparation preceded his public ministry.

Verses 11–26: The Royal Decree

The decree of Artaxerxes is remarkable. It permits all willing Israelites to return (verse 13), authorizes Ezra to inspect Judah and Jerusalem according to God's law (verse 14), and grants enormous resources: precious metals from the royal treasury and the people's freewill offerings (verses 15–16). The king even exempts temple workers from taxation (verse 24) and empowers Ezra to appoint judges and enforce the law (verse 25). The mechanism behind this generosity appears in verse 23: the king wanted to avoid divine wrath. Whether Artaxerxes fully understood Israel's God or simply feared cosmic consequences, God used his pagan wisdom to support His work. Verses 25–26 show that Ezra was given both civil and religious authority—a comprehensive mandate to restore the community according to God's law.

Verses 27–28: Ezra's Response of Gratitude

Ezra's doxology in verses 27–28 attributes everything to God's grace. "Blessed be the LORD God of our fathers"—he recognizes God's faithfulness across generations. The king's favor is understood as God's mercy extended through him. Verse 28 concludes with Ezra gathering "chief men" as "the hand of the LORD my God was upon" him. His leadership flowed from God's empowerment.

Application for Today

Ezra's example teaches us that God accomplishes His purposes through prepared, devoted servants. Like Ezra, we should prepare our hearts to know God's Word, live it out, and share it faithfully. We may be surprised how God opens doors through unlikely circumstances and people when our lives are fully submitted to His kingdom work.
