1. God Created All Things Out of Nothing (Ex Nihilo)
In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. The universe did not arise from pre-existing matter, nor from chance, nor from an eternal cycle of events. God spoke, and it came into being. He commanded, and it stood fast. By faith, believers understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that the things which are seen were not made of things which are visible. Creation was not an accident; it was a deliberate act of the sovereign God.
2. Creation Was the Work of the Triune God
The Father is the Creator, for He spoke the word. The Son is the Creator, for all things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. The Spirit is the Creator, for the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. The Father planned, the Son executed, and the Spirit animated. Creation is a work of the entire Trinity, each person acting according to His distinct role.
3. Creation Occurred in Six Literal Days
God created in six days and rested on the seventh. The Hebrew word yom, when used with a number (first day, second day, etc.), refers to a literal, twenty-four hour day. God called the light Day, and the darkness He called Night. The evening and the morning were the first day. This pattern of evening and morning establishes ordinary solar days. There is no indication in Scripture that these days were long ages or epochs. The Sabbath commandment is based upon the pattern of six days of work and one day of rest.
4. Creation Was by the Word of God's Power
By the word of the Lord the heavens were made, and all the host of them by the breath of His mouth. He spoke, and it was done; He commanded, and it stood fast. God did not labor or struggle to create. He simply spoke, and out of nothing, light, sky, land, seas, vegetation, sun, moon, stars, fish, birds, land animals, and man appeared. The power of His word is absolute and immediate.
5. All Things Were Created Good and Perfect
God saw everything that He had made, and indeed, it was very good. There was no sin, no death, no disease, no curse, no decay in the original creation. Everything was in perfect harmony, reflecting the goodness and wisdom of its Creator. Death entered the world not through creation, but through the sin of Adam. The original creation was morally pure and physically perfect.
6. Man Was Created Distinct from All Other Creatures
God said, "Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness." Man was not evolved from animals but was directly created by God from the dust of the ground. God breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and man became a living soul. Only man is made in the image of God, possessing rationality, morality, spirituality, and dominion over the rest of creation. This dignity and uniqueness belong to every human being.
7. Woman Was Created from Man and for Man
The Lord God said, "It is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper comparable to him." God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, took one of his ribs, and made the woman. God brought her to the man, and Adam said, "This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh." Woman was not created from an animal nor from the dust independently, but from man, establishing the order of creation: man first, then woman, and the sacred bond of marriage.
8. Creation Was for God's Glory Alone
You are worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honor and power, for You created all things, and by Your will they exist and were created. The heavens declare the glory of God, and the firmament shows His handiwork. The purpose of creation is not the happiness of man nor the satisfaction of any need in God. God is self-sufficient and needs nothing. He created for the display of His own glory—His power, wisdom, goodness, justice, and mercy.
9. All Things Are Sustained by God's Providence
He is before all things, and in Him all things consist (hold together). God upholds all things by the word of His power. Creation is not a clock that God wound up and left to run on its own. He continually preserves and governs every creature, every event, and every atom. Were He to withdraw His sustaining hand, all things would instantly cease to exist.
10. The Fall Corrupted Creation, but Redemption Restores It
Creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of Him who subjected it in hope. The curse that followed Adam's sin affected the entire creation: thorns, thistles, pain, decay, and death. But the creation itself also will be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God. The new heavens and new earth await the redeemed, where righteousness dwells.
11. Creation Refutes Atheism, Evolution, and Idolatry
The fool has said in his heart, "There is no God." The wrath of God is revealed against those who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, because what may be known of God is manifest in creation. Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools and exchanged the truth of God for a lie, worshipping the creature rather than the Creator. The doctrine of creation stands against all forms of naturalism, evolution, pantheism, and idolatry.
Conclusion
In the beginning, God created. This is the first and foundational truth of Scripture. The same God who spoke the universe into existence is the God who saves sinners through Jesus Christ. To deny the Creator is to deny the Redeemer. Let every believer worship the Lord, who made heaven, earth, sea, and all that is in them. He alone is worthy.
