Study Notes — Colossians 3
5 sectionsColossians 3 presents the practical outworking of the believer's union with Christ. Having established in chapters 1–2 that Christ is supreme and complete, Paul now shows how this doctrine transforms daily living. The chapter divides into two major movements: first, a call to put off the old life of sin and put on the new life of Christ (verses 1–11), and second, concrete instructions for Christian relationships in the home and workplace (verses 12–25). Throughout, Paul anchors all Christian conduct to our heavenly position in Christ and our future resurrection with Him.
Paul begins by reminding believers of a foundational reality: you have been raised with Christ. This is not future possibility but present spiritual fact. Because this is true, the logical command follows: seek those things which are above (verse 1). The word "seek" means to pursue intentionally and passionately. Our affections—what we love and desire—must align with our heavenly citizenship, not earthly pursuits (verse 2).
Why? Because ye are dead (verse 3). The believer has died to sin's dominion through identification with Christ's death. Our true life is now "hid with Christ in God"—hidden in the sense of secure, safe, and hidden from the accusations of Satan. This present hiddenness will become glorious visibility when Christ returns (verse 4): we shall appear with Him in glory. This future hope—our physical resurrection and eternal life in Christ's presence—should motivate us today to live heavenward rather than earthward.
Application: Ask yourself: What dominates my thoughts and desires? Are they earthly or heavenly? Paul invites us to live consciously as people who belong to another kingdom, whose ultimate citizenship is not here but in God's kingdom.
Because you are raised with Christ, you must mortify (put to death) sinful behaviors: sexual sin, uncleanness, lustful desires, and covetousness—which Paul strikingly identifies as idolatry (verse 5). Covetousness is idolatry because the coveting heart worships and serves the desired object rather than God. Such sins provoke God's wrath (verse 6), and believers must recognize they once walked in these things (verse 7).
But now comes the decisive word: put off all these (verse 8). Anger, malice, blasphemy, and filthy speech must be abandoned. We are to lie not one to another (verse 9) because we have put off the old man and put on the new man—the renewed self, renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him (verse 10). This new humanity transcends every human division (verse 11): Greek, Jew, circumcised, uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, bond, or free. Christ is all, and in all—Christ is the source, substance, and unifying reality of the new creation.
Application: Practical holiness is not merely behavior modification; it is a putting off and putting on rooted in our new identity. When tempted to sin, remember: this is not who you are anymore in Christ.
As the elect of God, holy and beloved, believers are to clothe themselves with Christian virtues: mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, and longsuffering (verse 12). Forgiveness is paramount—even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye (verse 13). Above all, charity (love) binds everything together as the bond of completeness (verse 14). Let the peace of God rule in your hearts (verse 15), and be thankful. Let Christ's word dwell in you richly through teaching and admonishing via psalms and hymns (verse 16). Whatever you do, do it in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks (verse 17).
Application: These verses show that Christian maturity is marked by love, peace, thankfulness, and Christ-centered speech. Pursue these virtues intentionally.
Paul now applies these principles to specific relationships. Wives are to submit to husbands; husbands to love wives sacrificially (verses 18–19). Children obey parents; fathers refrain from harshness (verses 20–21). Servants (workers) obey masters wholeheartedly, not merely for show, but in singleness of heart, fearing God, knowing they serve the Lord Christ (verses 22–24). This theology elevates work itself: we serve Jesus in our labor. Wrongdoing will be judged fairly; God shows no respect of persons (verse 25).
