The Nature of Our Affections
Scripture reveals that our affections—our deepest loves, desires, and emotional attachments—are central to our spiritual life. In Colossians 3:2, Paul commands believers to "set your affections on things above, not on things on the earth." This instruction recognizes that our hearts naturally attach themselves to something, and we must consciously choose the object of our deepest love.
The Bible presents affections not as mere feelings, but as the governing desires that shape our actions and priorities. When our affections are properly ordered, they become a powerful force for godliness. However, when misdirected, they lead us away from God and into spiritual bondage.
Earthly vs. Heavenly Affections
Scripture draws a clear distinction between setting our hearts on temporal versus eternal things. When Paul writes about setting affections "on things above," he's calling us to find our greatest joy, security, and satisfaction in Christ and His kingdom rather than in the passing pleasures of this world.
This doesn't mean we cannot enjoy God's good gifts in creation, but rather that these earthly blessings should never become the primary object of our affection. Our relationship with Christ, our eternal hope, and the things that matter to God's heart should capture our deepest emotions and strongest desires. When earthly things—whether possessions, relationships, or achievements—become our supreme affection, they become idols that compete with God for our worship.
Transforming Our Affections
The beautiful truth of the Gospel is that God doesn't merely command us to change our affections; He provides the power to transform them through His Spirit. As we grow in our knowledge of Christ's love and experience His goodness, our hearts naturally begin to treasure Him above all else. This transformation happens through regular engagement with God's Word, prayer, worship, and fellowship with other believers.
Practically, we can cultivate godly affections by meditating on God's character, remembering His faithfulness in our lives, and deliberately choosing to focus on eternal rather than temporary concerns. When we find our hearts pulled toward worldly things, we can return to the cross and remember the infinite love that Christ demonstrated there.
