Study Notes — 1 Corinthians 15
7 sectionsFirst Corinthians 15 stands as the most comprehensive biblical treatment of the resurrection of the dead and Christ's return. Paul begins by anchoring the entire gospel message in historical, eyewitness accounts of Christ's resurrection (verses 1–11), then systematically defends the doctrine against denial (verses 12–19). The chapter culminates in Paul's glorious vision of the transformation of believers' bodies at Christ's coming (verses 20–58). This is not abstract theology; it is the foundation upon which Christian hope, meaning, and obedience rest.
Paul opens by reminding the Corinthians that the gospel he preached is the same gospel they received and in which they stand. Salvation, he says, is maintained by remembering and holding fast to what was preached—not by human effort, but by faith appropriated and retained. The phrase "unless ye have believed in vain" (verse 2) does not suggest salvation can be lost, but warns against a hollow, superficial profession that never genuinely seized Christ.
Here Paul delivers the essential facts of the gospel in creedal form: Christ died for our sins, was buried, and rose on the third day—all according to Scripture. He then lists the resurrection appearances: to Peter (Cephas), the Twelve, over five hundred believers at once, James, all the apostles, and finally to Paul himself. Paul humbly acknowledges his late call and former opposition to the church, yet he stresses that by God's grace alone he labored more than all the other apostles. This personal testimony demonstrates that the gospel transforms sinners and empowers weak vessels for God's work.
Some in Corinth apparently denied bodily resurrection. Paul responds with iron logic: if there is no resurrection of the dead, then Christ is not risen. If Christ is not risen, then apostolic preaching is futile, faith is empty, believers are still in their sins, and those who have died in Christ are eternally lost (verse 18). The bleakness of verses 17–19 underscores that without the resurrection, Christian faith offers only despair, not hope.
But Christ is risen. He is the firstfruits of resurrection, guaranteeing that all who belong to Him will follow. Paul traces resurrection back to Adam: by one man death entered the world; by one man (Christ) comes resurrection. All who are in Christ shall be made alive in their proper order—Christ first, then believers at His coming. The chapter then sketches the end times: Christ will reign, subdue all enemies, and finally death itself will be conquered (verse 26).
Addressing the question of what kind of body the dead will receive, Paul uses the analogy of a seed. Just as a seed dies and transforms into a plant with a body suited to its nature, so our corruptible bodies will be raised imperishable, our weak bodies raised in power. We will bear a spiritual body, yet fully real—just as Christ's resurrection body was tangible yet glorified. The earthly body is natural; the resurrected body is spiritual, imperishable, and fitted for God's kingdom.
Paul discloses a mystery: not all believers will sleep in death; some will be alive at Christ's return. In an instant, at the trumpet's sound, the dead will be raised imperishable and the living transformed. Corruption will become incorruption; mortality will put on immortality. Death will be utterly defeated. This triumphant proclamation (verses 54–57) calls forth praise: "Thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ."
The resurrection is not a peripheral doctrine but the heartbeat of Christian faith. It validates Christ's claims, secures our salvation, and guarantees our future transformation. When we grasp that our bodies matter, that death is not the end, and that Christ will return to remake all things, we are freed to serve Him wholeheartedly today, knowing that our labor in the Lord is never in vain.
