1 Corinthians 12
Study Notes — 1 Corinthians 11
5 sectionsFirst Corinthians 11 addresses two critical areas of church life: the proper conduct of men and women in worship (verses 1–16), and the reverent observance of the Lord's Supper (verses 17–34). Paul begins by establishing the principle of headship—Christ over all, and the functional order within the church—before turning to correct serious abuses at the Corinthian communion table. Throughout this chapter, Paul appeals to creation order, nature, and the gospel itself to call believers back to biblical practice and spiritual seriousness.
Paul opens by inviting believers to imitate his example as he imitates Christ (v. 1). This is not arrogance but apostolic humility—Paul's life reflects Christ's. He then praises the Corinthians for remembering his teachings and keeping the ordinances he delivered (v. 2), before establishing the theological foundation for what follows: "the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God" (v. 3). This verse establishes a chain of functional headship, not superiority of worth. Christ submits to God the Father in His incarnate work; this mirrors how a believing wife may respectfully relate to her husband within the church community. All are equal in dignity before God (Galatians 3:28), yet God has ordained different functions.
Paul addresses the practice of head coverings in prayer and prophecy. A man praying or prophesying with his head covered dishonors Christ (his head) by obscuring the visual sign of his direct accountability to the Lord (v. 4). A woman praying or prophesying uncovered similarly dishonors the functional headship of her husband and "is even all one as if she were shaven" (v. 5)—a radical shame in that culture. Verse 7 notes that man is "the image and glory of God," while woman is "the glory of the man"—a reference to Eve's creation from Adam. Verses 8–9 ground this in creation order. Verse 10 presents a challenging phrase: "the woman ought to have power on her head because of the angels." Many scholars interpret this as the woman wearing a covering as a sign of her own authority and dignity before the heavenly witnesses.
Paul immediately balances his teaching: "neither is the man without the woman, neither the woman without the man, in the Lord" (v. 11). Men and women are interdependent; all things ultimately come from God (v. 12). Paul then appeals to nature itself: long hair on a man is shameful, but on a woman it is glorious and serves as a natural covering (vv. 14–15). Verse 16 adds a pastoral note—if anyone is contentious about these practices, the churches of God have no such custom. Paul is not establishing an iron law but calling for order and respect for functional distinctions in corporate worship.
Paul shifts to a more serious matter: divisions at the communion table (v. 18). The Corinthians were eating selfishly—some going hungry while others became drunk on wine (v. 21). This was not the Lord's Supper but a mockery of it. Paul reminds them of the institution (vv. 23–25) and solemnly warns that eating and drinking "unworthily" without discerning the body brings judgment (vv. 27–29). Self-examination before communion is required (v. 28). This abuse had brought weakness, sickness, and even death among them (v. 30). Paul's remedy is clear: wait for one another, eat at home if hungry, and approach the table in reverence and unity (vv. 33–34).
This chapter calls modern believers to examine both our worship practices and our treatment of the communion table. Whether regarding gender roles or the Lord's Supper, Paul's concern is order, respect, and remembrance. We should approach corporate worship with intentionality, honoring Christ's headship, and come to the table with serious self-examination and gratitude, never treating these sacred acts carelessly or divisively.
