1. The Resurrection Is a Fundamental Doctrine of Scripture
The resurrection of the dead is not an optional belief but essential to the gospel. Paul declared that if there is no resurrection of the dead, then Christ has not been raised. And if Christ has not been raised, faith is vain, sins are not forgiven, those who have died in Christ have perished, and believers are of all men most miserable. Therefore, the resurrection stands or falls with Christianity itself.
2. The Old Testament Taught the Resurrection
The resurrection was not a New Testament invention. Job declared that after his skin was destroyed, yet in his flesh he would see God. David spoke of God not allowing His Holy One to see corruption. Isaiah wrote that the dead shall live, and their dead bodies shall rise. Daniel prophesied that many who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life and some to shame and everlasting contempt.
3. Jesus Christ Is the Firstfruits of the Resurrection
Christ has been raised from the dead and has become the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. As death came through one man (Adam), so the resurrection of the dead comes through one man (Christ). For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ all shall be made alive. His resurrection is the pattern, the guarantee, and the first installment of the general resurrection.
4. The Resurrection Will Be a Bodily Resurrection
The body that is sown in corruption is raised in incorruption. It is sown in dishonor, raised in glory. It is sown in weakness, raised in power. It is sown a natural body, raised a spiritual body. This is not a non-physical body but a body suited for the spiritual realm—still tangible, still physical, but glorified. The resurrected body is the same body that died, yet transformed and perfected. Christ’s resurrected body is the model: He had flesh and bones, He ate food, yet He could appear and disappear and ascend to heaven.
5. The Resurrection of the Righteous Is to Everlasting Life
Those who have done good will come forth to the resurrection of life. The dead in Christ will rise first. Their resurrected bodies will be like Christ’s glorious body. They will shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father. They will never again die, for death has no dominion over them. Mortality will be swallowed up by life.
6. The Resurrection of the Wicked Is to Everlasting Judgment
Those who have done evil will come forth to the resurrection of damnation. The sea, death, and Hades will give up the dead that are in them, and each will be judged according to his works. The wicked will be raised with immortal bodies capable of enduring eternal punishment. Their resurrection is not to life but to judgment, to the second death in the lake of fire.
7. The Resurrection Is the Final Victory Over Death
Death is an enemy, the last enemy that will be destroyed. At the resurrection, the saying will be fulfilled: Death is swallowed up in victory. O Death, where is your sting? O Grave, where is your victory? The sting of death is sin, but thanks be to God, who gives the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
8. Believers Should Live in Light of the Resurrection
Knowing the resurrection, believers are to be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, because their labor is not in vain in the Lord. They are not to grieve as those who have no hope. They are to purify themselves and set their affections on things above, where Christ sits at the right hand of God.
Conclusion
The resurrection of the dead is the sure hope of every believer. Because Christ lives, His people shall live also. The grave is not the end. There is coming a day when all who are in the tombs will hear the voice of the Son of God and come forth. Blessed and holy is the one who has part in the first resurrection.
