Study Notes — John 5
6 sectionsJohn chapter 5 presents one of the most profound theological declarations in Scripture. Beginning with the healing of a man at the Pool of Bethesda, Jesus demonstrates His power over physical infirmity and then uses this miracle as a springboard for teaching about His divine identity and authority. The chapter reveals Jesus as the Son of God with unique power to give life, execute judgment, and grant eternal salvation—claims that provoke fierce opposition from Jewish leaders but offer hope to all who believe in Him.
Jesus attends a Jewish feast in Jerusalem and encounters a pool called Bethesda ("House of Mercy"), where multitudes of disabled people waited for healing. Among them lay a man who had suffered from his infirmity for thirty-eight years—longer than many live. This man's condition is not incidental; his long suffering emphasizes human helplessness and the limitations of earthly remedies. The setting itself teaches that physical healing, though real and compassionate, is not the deepest need of humanity.
Jesus approaches the man with a penetrating question: "Wilt thou be made whole?" (verse 6). The man's response reveals his hopelessness—he has no one to help him reach the water first. Yet Jesus does not wait for the pool's mythical stirring; with a simple command—"Rise, take up thy bed, and walk"—He accomplishes what thirty-eight years of waiting could not. Immediately, the man is made whole. The word here carries the authority of God Himself. This healing occurs on the Sabbath, a detail that becomes crucial to the chapter's larger message about Christ's authority over Jewish law.
The Jewish leaders immediately object—not to the miracle, but to the Sabbath violation of carrying a bed. Their legalism blinds them to the supernatural work before their eyes. When they identify Jesus as the healer, He has already withdrawn into the crowd (verse 13). Later, Jesus finds the man in the temple with a solemn warning: "sin no more, lest a worse thing come unto thee" (verse 14). This suggests that physical infirmity may sometimes relate to sin, though Jesus does not elaborate. The healed man then becomes an unintentional witness, telling the authorities it was Jesus who healed him.
The healing itself is merely the introduction. The Jewish leaders "sought to slay him" not primarily for the healing, but because Jesus claimed God as His Father, making Himself equal with God (verse 18). Jesus' response is revolutionary: He claims authority to give life, to raise the dead, and to execute all judgment (verses 19-27). These are prerogatives of God alone. Yet He grounds His authority in perfect unity with the Father and submission to Him—a paradox of divine equality and filial dependence that transcends human logic.
Jesus appeals to multiple witnesses: John the Baptist, His own works, the Father's testimony, and the Scriptures themselves (verses 31-39). Yet He confronts His audience with a tragic reality: they search the Scriptures seeking eternal life but refuse to come to Him, to whom the Scriptures testify (verses 39-40). Knowledge of Scripture without faith in Christ is spiritually futile. The chapter closes with Jesus pointing out that Moses—their trusted authority—actually wrote of Him. Rejection of Jesus is therefore rejection of Scripture itself.
Like the impotent man, we are spiritually helpless without Christ. Unlike earthly remedies, Jesus offers not temporary relief but eternal life through believing in Him. When we encounter opposition or skepticism about Jesus, remember: His works bear witness to His identity. Let us not fall into the trap of religious knowledge without personal faith. Come to Jesus today, just as you are, and receive the life only He can give.
