Study Notes — John 12
7 sectionsJohn 12 stands as a pivotal turning point in the Gospel narrative, marking the final week of Jesus' earthly ministry before His crucifixion. The chapter opens with intimate scenes of devotion in Bethany, transitions to Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusalem, and concludes with Jesus' solemn announcement that His "hour" has come—the hour of His glorification through death. Throughout these events, we witness both genuine faith and stubborn unbelief, as Jesus moves inexorably toward the cross while calling all people to follow Him into eternal life.
Six days before Passover, Jesus arrives at the home of Lazarus in Bethany—a small village where He has just performed one of His greatest miracles by raising Lazarus from the dead (John 11). At a supper held in Jesus' honor, Mary takes a pound of expensive spikenard and anoints His feet, wiping them with her hair. This was an act of profound devotion and worship, using a perfume worth approximately a year's wages. Judas Iscariot objects, suggesting the ointment should have been sold to help the poor. John reveals Judas's true motive: he was a thief who stole from the disciples' money bag (verses 4-6). Jesus defends Mary's beautiful act, explaining that she has anointed Him for His burial and that opportunities to serve the poor are constant, but His physical presence with them is temporary (verses 7-8). This teaches us that sometimes extravagant worship and devotion to Christ is exactly right, and that our highest allegiance must be to Jesus Himself.
News of Jesus' presence in Bethany spreads, and large crowds come—not only to see Jesus but also to witness Lazarus, the man raised from the dead. This miracle is becoming a powerful public testimony to Jesus' divine power. The religious authorities recognize the danger: Lazarus himself has become a living sign that will lead many to believe in Jesus. So they conspire to kill him as well (verses 10-11). This reveals the hardness of the human heart—rather than repent at the evidence of resurrection power, they plot murder.
The next day, as Jesus approaches Jerusalem for Passover, vast crowds greet Him with palm branches and shouts of "Hosanna" and "Blessed is the King of Israel" (verses 12-13). Jesus finds a young donkey and rides it into the city, fulfilling the Old Testament prophecy of Zechariah 9:9 (verses 14-15). The disciples do not immediately understand the significance; their full comprehension comes only after Jesus' resurrection and glorification (verse 16). The crowds following Jesus include those who witnessed the raising of Lazarus, and their testimony spreads (verses 17-18). Even the Pharisees grudgingly acknowledge that "the world is gone after him" (verse 19)—yet rather than believe, they remain opposed.
Some Greeks (likely God-fearing gentiles) approach Philip, requesting to see Jesus. This request signals that Jesus' ministry is about to expand beyond Israel to all nations. Jesus responds by declaring that "the hour is come, that the Son of man should be glorified" (verse 23). He then teaches that a grain of wheat must fall into the ground and die to bear much fruit (verse 24)—a direct reference to His coming death and its redemptive purpose. He calls His followers to deny themselves: whoever loves his earthly life will lose it, but whoever "hates his life in this world shall keep it unto life eternal" (verse 25). This is radical discipleship language, calling believers to ultimate surrender to Christ.
Jesus admits that His soul is troubled as He faces the cross (verse 27), yet He submits to the Father's will. The Father's voice from heaven affirms His name and promises future glorification (verse 28). Many misunderstand this voice as thunder, while others recognize it as an angel (verse 29). Jesus explains the voice came for their benefit, not His own (verse 30). He then declares that judgment is now occurring and Satan will be cast out through His lifting up—His crucifixion and exaltation (verses 31-33).
The people question how the Messiah can "be lifted up" if Christ abides forever (verse 34). Jesus responds with urgency: the light is with them only briefly; they must believe while they have the opportunity (verses 35-36). John then explains the fulfillment of Isaiah's prophecies regarding hardened hearts and spiritual blindness (verses 37-41). Yet some rulers do believe secretly, though fear of the Pharisees prevents public confession (verses 42-43). Jesus concludes with final proclamations: belief in Him is belief in the Father; He is the light come to save, not to judge; His words will judge at the last day; and everything He speaks comes from the Father's command (verses 44-50).
