1 One day as Jesus was teaching the people in the temple courts and proclaiming the gospel, the chief priests and scribes, together with the elders, came up to Him.

10 At harvest time, he sent a servant to the tenants to collect his share of the fruit of the vineyard. But the tenants beat the servant and sent him away empty-handed.

16 He will come and kill those tenants, and will give the vineyard to others.” And when the people heard this, they said, “May such a thing never happen!”

Having cleansed the temple, Jesus faces a barrage of challenges from the religious establishment—the chief priests, scribes, and Sadducees—each attempting to trap Him into saying something blasphemous or politically treasonous. Rather than being defensive, Jesus masterfully answers every question with wisdom that silences His critics and reveals the hollowness of their faith. Through parables, direct teaching, and cutting questions about Scripture itself, Jesus exposes the spiritual bankruptcy of the Jewish leadership while affirming His own divine authority and the resurrection hope of believers.
The religious authorities demand to know by what authority Jesus teaches and performs miracles (vv. 1–2). Rather than answer directly, Jesus responds with a counter-question about John the Baptist's baptism—whether it came from heaven or from men (vv. 3–4). This brilliant move forces the leaders into an impossible dilemma (vv. 5–6): if they acknowledge John's divine mission, they must explain why they rejected him; if they deny it, the people—who revered John as a prophet—will turn against them. Unable to answer without self-incrimination, they admit ignorance (v. 7), and Jesus therefore withholds His direct answer (v. 8). The lesson here is profound: those who refuse to acknowledge God's previous messengers forfeit the right to understand His present work. Jesus does not owe explanations to those whose hearts are closed to truth.
Jesus now addresses the people directly with a parable that unmasks the guilt of the religious leadership (vv. 9–15). A vineyard owner sends servants to collect fruit, but the husbandmen beat and reject them one after another. Finally, he sends his beloved son, thinking they will respect him—but they kill him instead to seize his inheritance (vv. 13–15). The application is devastating: God (the vineyard owner) sent prophet after prophet (the servants), and Israel's leaders rejected and killed them. Now God has sent His Son (Jesus), and they will reject Him too. The parable culminates with Jesus asking what the owner will do—and the crowd itself pronounces judgment: the vineyard will be taken from these husbandmen and given to others (v. 16).
Jesus then applies Psalm 118:22, describing Himself as the stone which the builders rejected (v. 17)—a stone that becomes the chief cornerstone of God's house. Verses 18 reinforces this: whoever falls on this stone (rejects Christ in faith) faces breaking; whoever the stone falls on (God's judgment) will be ground to powder. The religious leaders understand immediately that the parable condemns them (v. 19), and they seek to arrest Jesus—but fear of the people restrains them.
The leaders send spies to trap Jesus with a politically explosive question: Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar? (vv. 19–22). If Jesus says yes, He loses popular support; if no, He can be charged with sedition. With surgical precision, Jesus asks to see a denarius and identifies whose image is on it (vv. 23–24). His answer—render unto Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and unto God the things that are God's (v. 25)—establishes proper spheres of authority without compromising either. Believers owe civil obedience in earthly matters but supreme allegiance to God alone. The spies are silenced and marveled (v. 26).
The Sadducees, who deny resurrection, pose a trick question about a woman married to seven brothers (vv. 27–33). Jesus clarifies that in the resurrection, believers neither marry nor die—they are equal to angels (vv. 34–35). More importantly, He proves resurrection from Scripture itself: God called Himself the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob—implying these patriarchs still live (vv. 37–38). For God is not God of the dead but of the living. Even some scribes acknowledge Jesus has answered well (v. 39), and all questions cease (v. 40).
Jesus asks how Christ can be merely David's son when David himself calls the Messiah "Lord" in Psalm 110 (vv. 41–44). Finally, He warns the people to beware of scribes who seek honor and devour widows' houses (vv. 45–47)—a sobering reminder that theological credentials without godly character lead to greater judgment.
Luke 20 reminds us that genuine faith requires honest engagement with God's Word, not clever evasion. When we encounter Jesus's claims, neutrality is impossible—we either receive Him as Lord or reject Him as the builders did. Moreover, we are called to give Caesar his due while keeping our supreme allegiance to God
