Idolatry

Idolatry is the worship of false gods or the elevation of anything above God, explicitly condemned throughout Scripture as a grave sin that provokes God's judgment. The Bible repeatedly warns believers to reject idols and remain faithful to the one true God alone.

Overview

Idolatry represents a fundamental violation of the first commandment—to have no other gods before the Lord (Exodus 20:3). Whether through carved images, false religions, or the misplacement of ultimate trust in created things, idolatry fractures humanity's relationship with God and invites His righteous judgment. Scripture demonstrates that even God's chosen leaders fell into this sin with devastating consequences.

Key Scriptures

"Therefore I still contend with you, declares the Lord, and with your children's children I will contend" (Jeremiah 2:9, ESV). "For my people have committed two evils: they have forsaken me, the fountain of living waters, and hewed out cisterns for themselves, broken cisterns that can hold no water" (Jeremiah 2:13, ESV). "Now King Solomon loved many foreign women...he had seven hundred wives and three hundred concubines...his wives turned away his heart after other gods" (1 Kings 11:1-4, ESV).

Application

Examine your heart honestly: what occupies the central place in your affections and decisions—is it Christ alone, or have other loyalties subtly become your functional god?
