Study Notes — Matthew 4
5 sectionsMatthew chapter 4 presents two pivotal moments in Jesus' earthly ministry: His testing in the wilderness and the beginning of His public proclamation. After His baptism, Jesus is led by the Holy Spirit into the desert where Satan tempts Him three times, each designed to appeal to His physical needs, pride, and desire for power. By refusing each temptation through Scripture, Jesus models obedience to God's Word and defeats the enemy's schemes. The chapter then shifts to Jesus' inaugural preaching campaign in Galilee, where He calls His first disciples and demonstrates His authority through teaching, preaching, and healing—establishing the pattern of His redemptive ministry.
Jesus is led into the wilderness by the Holy Spirit to be tempted by the devil. This is not a contradiction; God permits the temptation to strengthen Jesus' resolve and to demonstrate His sinlessness. After forty days and nights of fasting, Jesus is physically weakened and hungry. Satan's first temptation is deceptively simple: "If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread" (verse 3). Notice Satan says "if"—he is subtly questioning Jesus' identity and authority, hoping to provoke Him into proving Himself through a self-serving miracle.
Jesus responds with Scripture: "Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God" (verse 4). This quote from Deuteronomy 8:3 affirms that spiritual nourishment is more vital than physical sustenance, and that obedience to God's Word takes precedence over meeting bodily desires. The lesson for us: genuine faith prioritizes communion with God over convenience and comfort.
Satan now takes Jesus to the pinnacle of the temple in Jerusalem and tempts Him with a subtle appeal to vanity: "If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down" (verse 6). Satan even quotes Scripture (Psalm 91:11-12) to suggest that God's angels will protect Him. This temptation exploits the desire for recognition and spectacular demonstration of power.
Jesus again counters with God's Word: "Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God" (verse 7, from Deuteronomy 6:16). To test God's faithfulness through reckless action is sin. We must not presume upon God's grace or demand signs to prove His care. The application is clear: true faith does not seek dramatic proof but walks humbly in obedience.
The final temptation is the most audacious. Satan shows Jesus all the kingdoms of the world and their glory, offering them to Him if Jesus will worship Satan (verses 8-9). This is a direct assault on Jesus' ultimate purpose—to gain the kingdom through the cross rather than through compromise.
Jesus' response is emphatic: "Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God" (verse 10). He invokes Deuteronomy 6:13, affirming that God alone deserves worship and exclusive allegiance. Immediately, Satan departs, and angels minister to Jesus (verse 11). This victory assures us that Christ has already conquered temptation and the enemy. When we resist sin through God's Word, we stand on Christ's victory.
Hearing of John's imprisonment, Jesus moves to Galilee and settles in Capernaum, fulfilling Isaiah's prophecy (verses 12-16). He begins preaching "Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand" (verse 17). Jesus then calls four fishermen—Peter, Andrew, James, and John—with the promise that He will make them "fishers of men" (verses 18-22). Throughout Galilee, He teaches, preaches the gospel, and heals all manner of sickness and demon possession (verses 23-24). His fame spreads, and great multitudes follow Him (verse 25).
Christ's victory over temptation gives believers confidence to resist sin. Like Jesus, we overcome temptation through Scripture and submission to God's Word. As His disciples, we are called to follow Him wholeheartedly, leaving behind the nets of worldly pursuits. And as witnesses of His healing and redemptive power, we are commissioned to share the gospel with a lost world watching in spiritual darkness.
