Theft

Theft is condemned throughout Scripture as a violation of God's law and a sin against both God and neighbor. The Bible calls believers to integrity, honesty, and respect for others' possessions.

Overview

Scripture universally prohibits stealing as a violation of God's moral law and a breach of covenant community. Theft reflects a heart of covetousness and disregard for others, and God takes such sin seriously, promising judgment on those who steal and withhold what is just.

Key Scriptures

"You shall not steal" (Exodus 20:15, ESV). "Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal" (Matthew 6:19, NIV). "Cursed is the one who moves his neighbor's boundary stone... And all the people shall say, 'Amen'" (Deuteronomy 27:17, ESV). "Surely I was sinful at birth, sinful from the time my mother conceived me" (Psalm 51:5, ESV), reminding us that theft stems from our fallen nature and requires the transforming grace of Christ.

Application

Examine your heart for any dishonesty or covetousness, and commit to absolute integrity in all dealings, knowing that honoring others' property honors God's character.
