Study Notes — Matthew 6
7 sectionsMatthew 6 is often called the heart of the Sermon on the Mount, presenting Jesus' corrective teaching on authentic Christian discipleship. The chapter repeatedly contrasts outward religious performance with inward devotion, using three specific practices—almsgiving, prayer, and fasting—as illustrations. Throughout these verses, Jesus calls believers to abandon the hypocrite's hunger for human approval and instead cultivate a genuine, secret relationship with their heavenly Father. The chapter concludes with Jesus addressing the root issue beneath all these concerns: divided loyalty and anxiety, calling His disciples to single-hearted devotion to God and His kingdom.
Jesus begins by warning against performing good deeds "to be seen of men" (v. 1). The hypocrites in the synagogues literally "sound a trumpet" before giving alms—a vivid image of self-promotion that has become proverbial for ostentatious charity. Jesus declares with divine finality: "They have their reward" (v. 2). That is, public praise is all they will ever receive. In contrast, the believer's left hand should not know what the right hand is doing (v. 3)—meaning our giving should be so private and unconscious of itself that it escapes even our own notice. The promise is powerful: the Father who sees in secret will reward openly (v. 4). This does not guarantee material wealth, but divine recognition and blessing in the life to come.
Application: Examine your motivations when you serve or give. Are you hoping someone notices? True generosity acts quietly, letting God alone be the audience.
Jesus turns to prayer with the same rebuke. The hypocrites love standing "in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets" to be seen (v. 5)—again, their reward is merely human applause. Instead, Jesus instructs: "Enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret" (v. 6). This is not forbidding corporate worship, but rather establishing the priority of secret devotion. Jesus also warns against "vain repetitions" (v. 7)—the pagan notion that God is swayed by many words. The comfort of verse 8 is profound: your Father already knows what you need before you ask Him. Prayer is not about informing God; it is about alignment with His will and deepening communion with Him.
Application: Guard your prayer life as your most intimate conversation. Brevity paired with sincerity pleases God far more than lengthy eloquence.
Here Jesus provides the model prayer. It opens with worship—"Hallowed be thy name" (v. 9)—establishing God's glory as our first concern. It then moves to kingdom priorities: God's reign coming, His will being done on earth as in heaven (v. 10). Only then does it address personal needs: daily bread (v. 11), forgiveness of debts (v. 12), and deliverance from temptation and evil (v. 13). The doxology affirms God's eternal kingdom, power, and glory. Notice the prayer's balance: reverence, submission, dependence, and hope.
Jesus immediately underscores a sobering principle: forgiveness toward others is the condition for receiving forgiveness from the Father. This is not earning grace, but rather demonstrating a heart that has genuinely experienced grace and therefore extends it to others.
The third spiritual discipline follows the same pattern. Hypocrites "disfigure their faces" to appear pious (v. 16), but the believer should fast secretly, even anointing the head and washing the face to appear normal (vv. 17–18). God sees and rewards what is done in secret.
Jesus concludes by addressing the root anxiety beneath all self-righteous performance: the love of money and material security. Earthly treasures decay; heavenly treasures endure (vv. 19–20). Where your treasure is, there your heart will be (v. 21). A single, undivided eye (v. 22) allows light to fill the whole body, while a divided eye brings darkness (v. 23). No one can serve two masters—God and mammon (v. 24). Therefore, believers should abandon anxiety about food and clothing (vv. 25–31), trusting that the Father feeds the birds and clothes the lilies. The cure for anxiety is priority: "Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you" (v. 33).
Matthew 6 invites us to radical honesty about our motives and a radical trust in God's provision. In a culture obsessed with image and validation, Jesus calls us to hidden faithfulness. In an age of anxiety, He calls us to kingdom priorities. The question for each believer is simple: Are you performing for applause, or are you praying, giving, and living for an audience of One
