Study Notes — Matthew 15
5 sectionsMatthew 15 presents two major confrontations with religious hypocrisy followed by demonstrations of Christ's compassion and power. Jesus challenges the Pharisees' man-made traditions that obscure God's true commands, teaching that spiritual defilement comes from within the human heart, not from external observances. The chapter then shifts to show Jesus extending grace to a Gentile woman and feeding a great multitude, illustrating that His kingdom transcends cultural boundaries and that true righteousness flows from faith and a transformed heart.
Religious leaders from Jerusalem accuse Jesus's disciples of breaking the "tradition of the elders" by eating without ceremonial hand-washing (v. 2). Rather than defend His disciples on their terms, Jesus turns the tables with a counter-accusation: the Pharisees themselves transgress God's actual commandment through their traditions (v. 3). He cites the Fifth Commandment to honor parents (v. 4), then exposes their corruption: they allowed people to declare their resources "Corban" (a gift to God), thereby exempting themselves from supporting aging parents while keeping the money for themselves (vv. 5–6). This made God's command "of none effect" (v. 6)—nullified by human invention. Jesus quotes Isaiah 29:13, condemning worship that is mere lip service while the heart remains distant from God (vv. 7–9). The lesson is piercing: external ritual divorced from genuine obedience and love is spiritual hypocrisy.
Jesus calls the multitude to hear a radical principle: food entering the mouth does not defile a person; rather, words and actions flowing from a corrupt heart do (vv. 10–11). When the disciples mention the Pharisees' offense, Jesus responds with stern finality—every plant (teaching) not planted by the Father will be uprooted, and blind leaders inevitably lead their followers to destruction (vv. 12–14). Peter asks for clarification, and Jesus gently rebukes the disciples for lacking understanding. He explains physiologically that food passes through the body and is eliminated (v. 17), but words and deeds flow from the heart and reveal our true spiritual condition (v. 18). He then lists the grave sins that emerge from an unregenerate heart: evil thoughts, murder, adultery, theft, false witness, and blasphemy (v. 19). These, not unwashed hands, are what truly defile (v. 20). This teaching fundamentally reorients righteousness from external compliance to internal transformation.
Jesus withdraws toward Tyre and Sidon, pagan Gentile territory. A Canaanite woman—outside Israel's covenant community—cries out for mercy for her demon-possessed daughter (v. 22). Initially, Jesus does not answer (v. 23). When she persists, He declares His primary mission is to "the lost sheep of the house of Israel" (v. 24). Using the metaphor of children's bread cast to dogs, He seems to test her faith (vv. 25–26). Rather than being offended, she humbly accepts the analogy but notes that even dogs eat crumbs from their master's table (v. 27). Her persistent, humble faith—combined with her acknowledgment of Christ's authority—moves His heart. He grants her request, and her daughter is healed instantly (v. 28).
Jesus ministers to great multitudes of broken and suffering people, healing them all (vv. 29–31). Moved by compassion after three days with Him, Jesus feeds four thousand with seven loaves and a few fish—an echo of the earlier feeding of the five thousand (vv. 32–38). His concern for the people's physical welfare mirrors His spiritual provision: Jesus is the Shepherd who feeds, heals, and never abandons His flock.
We must examine our own hearts: do we prioritize external religious observance while neglecting genuine love for God and neighbor? True discipleship requires that our inner life—our thoughts, motives, and affections—be transformed by the Holy Spirit. Like the Canaanite woman, persistence in faith and humility before Christ opens doors of grace. Finally, we serve a Lord of boundless compassion who extends mercy beyond our expectations and never forgets those who suffer.
