Zeal

Biblical zeal is passionate, wholehearted devotion to God and His truth, demonstrated through fervent action and commitment. True zeal must be grounded in knowledge and directed toward glorifying God rather than selfish ambition.

Overview

Zeal in Scripture represents fervent dedication to God's purposes and holiness. King Josiah exemplified this when he zealously removed idolatrous practices and restored proper worship (2 Kings 23:4-14). However, zeal without knowledge can become destructive, as Paul warned regarding his former persecution of Christians (Acts 18:25). Authentic zeal flows from love for God and His house.

Key Scriptures

"Zeal for your house will consume me" (John 2:17, ESV) - Christ's passionate commitment to God's temple. "The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this" (Isaiah 9:7, NASB) - God's perfect zeal accomplishes His purposes. "So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God" (1 Corinthians 10:31, NIV) - Channel zeal toward God's glory.

Application

Examine whether your spiritual fervor is rooted in biblical knowledge and directed toward God's glory, not personal recognition or control.
