Study Notes — Romans 10
4 sectionsRomans 10 addresses a sobering reality: the nation of Israel, despite their religious zeal, has rejected God's offer of salvation through Christ. Paul's heart breaks for his own people (v. 1), yet he diagnoses their fundamental problem—they have pursued righteousness through the law rather than through faith in Jesus. This chapter pivots from theological explanation to practical declaration, showing that salvation comes through a simple yet profound confession: believing in Jesus Christ and calling upon His name. Paul then addresses the missionary urgency this creates: if people are to be saved, they must hear the gospel, and someone must be sent to preach it.
Paul opens with deep pastoral concern for Israel's salvation. He acknowledges their religious sincerity—they have "a zeal of God"—but their zeal is not according to knowledge (v. 2). The tragedy is that Israel pursued righteousness through obedience to the law while remaining ignorant of God's righteousness (v. 3), which is the righteousness that comes by faith in Christ alone. They attempted to establish their own righteousness rather than submit to the righteousness God offers freely through the gospel.
Verse 4 contains the watershed statement: "Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth." This does not mean the law is abolished, but that Christ is its fulfillment and goal. The law itself testified to this: Moses wrote that whoever obeys the law shall live by it (v. 5)—a standard no fallen human can meet. The law was never meant to save; it was meant to show us our need for a Savior.
Paul now contrasts law-righteousness with faith-righteousness. Faith doesn't require heroic spiritual achievement (scaling heaven or descending to the abyss). Instead, the gospel message is simple and near: "The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach" (v. 8). Salvation requires two essential acts: belief in the heart that God raised Jesus from the dead, and confession with the mouth that Jesus is Lord (v. 9). This dual action—inward faith and outward confession—produces salvation (v. 10).
Paul emphasizes the inclusive nature of this gospel: there is no difference between Jew and Greek (v. 12). The same Lord is rich in mercy toward all who call upon Him. His promise is clear: "Whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved" (v. 13).
If salvation requires calling on Christ, then people must hear about Him. Paul develops a logical chain: calling requires belief, belief requires hearing, and hearing requires a preacher, and preachers must be sent (vv. 14–15). This urgency fuels evangelical mission. Yet Paul acknowledges that not all have obeyed the gospel (v. 16). Israel had the advantage—Moses and the prophets spoke to them—yet many refused (vv. 18–21). Even so, God's patience remains: "All day long I have stretched forth my hands unto a disobedient and gainsaying people" (v. 21).
This chapter challenges us to examine our own hearts. Do we possess mere religious activity without genuine faith in Christ? More importantly, it reminds us that salvation is beautifully simple: believe that Jesus rose from the dead and confess Him as Lord. Finally, it motivates us toward evangelism—people still need to hear, and God still calls us to send preachers with the gospel of peace. Our responsibility is to ensure that no one in our sphere of influence remains ignorant of Christ's offer of free righteousness.
