Overview
Presumption is the sin of relying on our own understanding rather than seeking God's guidance, or acting as though we are exempt from God's laws and consequences. It often manifests as pride, overconfidence, and a refusal to listen to wise counsel. The Bible consistently warns that presumption leads to shame, failure, and spiritual ruin.
Key Scriptures
"The way of a fool is right in his own eyes, but a wise man listens to advice" (Proverbs 12:15, ESV).
"If this is in your heart, saying, 'Peace shall be mine, even though I walk in the stubbornness of my heart'... the Lord will not be willing to forgive him" (Deuteronomy 29:19-20, NASB).
"Before destruction a man's heart is haughty, but humility comes before honor" (Proverbs 18:12, NIV).
Application
Examine your decisions to ensure you are seeking God's counsel through Scripture and wise advisors rather than trusting solely in your own judgment.
