Overview
The miraculous gifts of the Holy Spirit—including healing, miracles, prophecy, discernment, and speaking in tongues—were given to the early church as signs of God's kingdom and means of edification. These gifts were distributed by the Holy Spirit's sovereign choice to various believers as He determined, not as individuals selected them.
Key Scriptures
"And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied" (Acts 19:6, KJV).
"Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I would not have you ignorant... Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. And there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord. And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all. But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal" (1 Corinthians 12:1, 4-7, KJV).
"Desire earnestly the spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy" (1 Corinthians 14:1, NASB).
Application
Seek to use whatever spiritual gifts God has given you faithfully for edifying the body of Christ rather than personal exaltation.
