Sodom

Sodom was an ancient city whose wickedness provoked God's judgment, yet Abraham's intercession revealed God's character as both just and merciful. The account demonstrates God's patience with sin and His willingness to spare cities for the sake of the righteous.

Overview

Genesis 18 records Abraham's dialogue with the Lord concerning Sodom's impending destruction. Abraham learned that God would judge the city for its great sin, yet boldly interceded for mercy. This passage reveals God's nature: He abhors sin but desires to spare the righteous and shows patience before executing judgment.

Key Scriptures

"Then the Lord said, 'The outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is great and their sin is very grave'" (Genesis 18:20, ESV).

"Will you indeed sweep away the righteous with the wicked?" (Genesis 18:23, ESV). Abraham pressed God, asking if He would spare Sodom for fifty righteous people, and God agreed—ultimately willing to spare the city for even ten righteous (Genesis 18:32).

Application

Believers should trust that God judges sin justly while interceding boldly in prayer for others, knowing He delights in mercy and responds to faithful petition.
