Amorites

The Amorites were a powerful Canaanite people whose defeat by Israel demonstrates God's faithfulness in fulfilling His promises to His chosen people.

The Amorites in Biblical History

The Amorites were descendants of Canaan, son of Ham, making them part of the broader Canaanite peoples that occupied the Promised Land before Israel's conquest. Genesis 10:16 lists the Amorites among the nations that descended from Canaan, establishing their place in the biblical narrative from the earliest times. They were a significant and powerful people who controlled large portions of the land God had promised to Abraham and his descendants.

During Israel's wilderness journey, the Amorites posed a major obstacle to God's people entering their inheritance. Numbers 21:21-25 records how Israel requested safe passage through Amorite territory, but King Sihon refused and attacked Israel instead. God gave Israel victory, and they conquered Sihon's entire kingdom. Similarly, Deuteronomy 3:8 describes how Israel took the land "from the River Arnon to Mount Hermon" from these two Amorite kings, demonstrating God's power to remove obstacles from His people's path.

God's Judgment and Israel's Victory

The defeat of the Amorites reveals important truths about God's character and His dealings with nations. In Genesis 15:16, God told Abraham that his descendants would not inherit the land immediately because "the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet complete." This shows us that God is patient and just—He doesn't judge hastily but waits for sin to reach its full measure. The Amorites' practices included idolatry, child sacrifice, and other abominations that eventually demanded divine judgment.

Joshua 10:10-12 provides a dramatic account of God's supernatural intervention against the Amorites when He caused the sun to stand still during battle, allowing Israel to achieve complete victory. This miraculous event demonstrates that when God fights for His people, no enemy can stand against them. The conquest of the Amorites wasn't merely a human military achievement—it was God fulfilling His covenant promises to give Israel the land He had sworn to their fathers.

Lessons for Believers Today

The account of the Amorites offers profound encouragement for modern believers facing seemingly impossible obstacles. Just as God removed the powerful Amorite kingdoms from Israel's path, He remains faithful to fulfill His promises to us today. When we face challenges that seem insurmountable, we can trust that our covenant-keeping God will make a way for His purposes to be accomplished in our lives.

The patient judgment of the Amorites also reminds us of God's mercy and justice. While God is longsuffering, persistent rebellion against Him ultimately leads to judgment. This should motivate us to live in grateful obedience to our loving Father, while also compelling us to share the gospel with urgency, knowing that God's patience will not last forever.

Then the Lord said to him, "Know for certain that for four hundred years your descendants will be strangers in a country not their own and that they will be enslaved and mistreated there. But I will punish the nation they serve as slaves, and afterward they will come out with great possessions... In the fourth generation your descendants will come back here, for the sin of the Amorites has not yet reached its full measure." - Genesis 15:13-16
