Overview
Throughout Scripture, orphans represent the vulnerable and defenseless who require special care and protection. God repeatedly commands His people to safeguard orphans' rights, provide for their material needs, and show them mercy. This obligation reflects both God's character as a defender of the weak and His people's calling to live out His justice and compassion.

"You shall not afflict any widow or orphan. If you afflict them at all, and they cry out to me, I will surely hear their cry" (Exodus 22:22-23, ESV).
"When you reap the harvest of your land, you shall not reap your field right up to its edge, nor shall you gather the gleanings after your harvest... you shall leave them for the poor and for the sojourner" (Deuteronomy 24:19-21, ESV)—provisions that specifically protected orphans.
