Wine Press

A wine press was an ancient agricultural tool used to extract juice from grapes by treading or crushing them. In Scripture, it symbolizes both God's provision and His judgment.

Overview

Wine presses were essential to ancient Near Eastern agriculture, typically consisting of a treading floor and a collecting vat. Grapes were crushed by foot or stone to produce wine, which was a staple beverage and commodity. The wine press also appears metaphorically in Scripture to represent God's wrath and judgment upon sin.

Key Scriptures

"You shall eat it in a clean place, you and your sons and your daughters, for it is your due and your sons' due, from the sacrifices of the Lord's peace offerings" (Numbers 18:31, ESV). "When you beat down your olive trees, you shall not go over the boughs again. It shall be for the sojourner, the fatherless, and the widow" (Deuteronomy 15:14, ESV). "The wine press outside the city was trodden, and blood flowed from the wine press, as high as a horse's bridle, for 1,600 stadia" (Revelation 14:20, ESV).

Application

Reflect on how God's judgment is both real and purposeful, while also considering His call to share generously with those in need, as demonstrated through the harvest laws He established for Israel.
