Overview
Rechab and his brother Baanah were captains in Ish-bosheth's army. Seeking to gain favor with David after the house of Saul's decline, they assassinated their master and brought his head to David, hoping for a reward. David, however, recognized their treachery and had them executed, making clear that murder for personal advancement—not justice—would not be tolerated in his kingdom.

David said to them, "As the LORD lives, who has redeemed my life out of every adversity, when one told me, 'Behold, Saul is dead,' thinking to bring good news, I seized him and killed him at Ziklag, instead of rewarding him for his news. How much more, when wicked men have killed a righteous man in his own house on his bed, shall I not now require his blood at your hand and destroy you from the earth?" (2 Samuel 4:9-10, ESV).
