Study Notes — Matthew 21
9 sectionsMatthew 21 presents the climactic final week of Jesus's earthly ministry, beginning with His triumphal entry into Jerusalem and culminating in sharp confrontations with Israel's religious leaders. The chapter showcases Jesus as King (riding into the city as prophecy foretold), as Lord of the temple (cleansing it of corrupt commerce), and as Judge (through parables warning of judgment). Throughout these events, we witness both genuine faith—represented by the crowds, children, blind, and lame—and hardened rejection from those in spiritual authority. This chapter marks the turning point where Jesus moves from public ministry toward the cross.
Jesus sends two disciples ahead to retrieve a donkey and its colt. His simple instruction—"The Lord hath need of them"—demonstrates both His authority and the willing obedience of the disciples. Matthew explicitly connects this event to Zechariah 9:9, fulfilling the prophecy of the Messiah entering Jerusalem in humility, not military power. The deliberate choice of a donkey (an animal of peace, not war) reveals the nature of Christ's kingdom. This wasn't the conquering warrior Israel expected, but the humble, redemptive King they truly needed.
The disciples obey immediately. The crowd's spontaneous response—spreading garments, cutting branches, and shouting "Hosanna to the son of David"—shows genuine popular support. "Hosanna" means "save us now," expressing messianic hope. Yet this same crowd will demand His crucifixion days later (27:20-23). The moment reveals how easily human emotion substitutes for true faith, and how quickly favor can turn to rejection when expectations aren't met.
Upon entering Jerusalem, Jesus moves directly to the temple and drives out the merchants and moneychangers. This wasn't an impulsive act but a deliberate prophetic sign, fulfilling His role as Lord. The temple had become a marketplace of greed rather than a house of prayer (quoting Isaiah 56:7). By overturning tables and removing sellers, Jesus condemns not commerce itself but the corruption of sacred space and the exploitation of worshippers—particularly the poor who needed to purchase sacrificial doves.
The blind and lame come to Jesus in the temple, and He heals them. The chief priests and scribes, offended by the children crying "Hosanna to the son of David," confront Jesus. Rather than defending Himself with arguments, Jesus quotes Psalm 8:2, pointing out that even children recognize His identity. The religious leaders' complaint about childish praise inadvertently reveals their spiritual blindness—they cannot perceive what little children intuitively understand.
The next morning, Jesus curses a fig tree that bears only leaves. This symbolic action represents judgment on fruitless religion—mere outward appearance without genuine substance. The tree withers immediately. Rather than explain the parable, Jesus uses it to teach about faith and prayer (verses 21–22). Believers who pray with genuine faith, without doubt, will see God's power at work. The lesson isn't about magical words or positive thinking, but about faith rooted in God's character and purposes.
The chief priests demand to know by what authority Jesus acts. Jesus responds not with direct argument but with a counter-question about John the Baptist's authority. When they refuse to answer (fearing the crowd), Jesus refuses to explain further. He then teaches the parable of two sons: one refuses initially but repents and obeys; the other promises obedience but doesn't deliver. Jesus applies this directly: tax collectors and prostitutes who repent enter God's kingdom ahead of religious leaders who refuse to believe.
This parable describes God as a householder who plants a vineyard (representing Israel) and rents it to husbandmen. When He sends servants (the prophets) to collect fruit, they're beaten and killed. Finally He sends His Son, whom the husbandmen murder, expecting to seize the inheritance. Jesus then applies Psalm 118:22—the rejected stone becomes the cornerstone. The vineyard will be given to others who produce fruit. This prophecy foreshadows both His resurrection and the inclusion of Gentiles in God's kingdom.
The chief priests and Pharisees understand the parables target them. Yet they fear arresting Jesus because the crowds regard Him as a prophet. Their opposition is not intellectual but motivated by self-preservation and threatened authority.
Matthew 21 challenges us to examine our own hearts. Do we acclaim Jesus with our lips while harboring doubt? Are we producing fruit in our lives—genuine repentance, obedience, and transformed character—or merely maintaining an outward appearance of faith?
