Money Changers

Jesus cleansed the temple by driving out the money changers who were conducting business in God's house, demonstrating His zeal for worship and condemnation of greed and commercialism in sacred spaces.

Overview

The money changers operated in the temple courts, exchanging Roman currency for temple currency required for offerings and services. Their presence represented the commercialization of worship and exploitation of pilgrims. Jesus's forceful removal of them revealed His righteous anger at the desecration of God's house.

Key Scriptures

"Jesus entered the temple courts and drove out all who were buying and selling there. He overturned the tables of the money changers and the benches of those selling doves." (Matthew 21:12, NIV)

"Jesus entered the temple courts and began driving out those who were buying and selling there. He overturned the tables of the money changers and the benches of those selling doves." (Mark 11:15, NIV)

"So he made a whip out of cords, and drove all from the temple courts, both sheep and cattle; he scattered the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables." (John 2:15, NIV)

Application

Guard your heart against allowing commercialism or worldly pursuits to corrupt your worship and devotion to God.
