Oppression

Oppression is the unjust exercise of authority or power over the vulnerable, which God explicitly condemns and promises to judge. Scripture calls believers to defend the oppressed and seek justice as an expression of God's character.

Overview

The Bible presents oppression as a serious sin against God's character and His concern for the vulnerable. From the psalms to the prophets, Scripture reveals that God hears the cry of the oppressed and stands as their defender. Oppressors—whether through exploitation, abuse of power, or denial of justice—face God's judgment, while believers are called to advocate for the helpless.

Key Scriptures

"The Lord is a refuge for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble" (Psalm 9:9, NIV). "The Lord works righteousness and justice for all the oppressed" (Psalm 103:6, NIV). "If you see the oppression of the poor and the denial of justice and righteousness in a province, do not be astonished" (Ecclesiastes 5:8, NASB). "Look! The wages you failed to pay the workers who mowed your fields are crying out against you. The cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord Almighty" (James 5:4, NIV).

Application

Believers should actively oppose injustice in their communities and defend those who cannot defend themselves, reflecting God's heart for the vulnerable.
