Polytheism

Polytheism is the worship of multiple gods, which Scripture consistently condemns as idolatry and unfaithfulness to the one true God. The Bible documents both Israel's struggle against polytheistic practices and God's call to exclusive worship.

Overview

Throughout Scripture, polytheism represents a fundamental departure from covenant faithfulness to the Lord. The Old Testament records Israel's repeated temptation toward the gods of surrounding nations, including Baal, Ashtoreth, and household idols. God's law demands exclusive allegiance: "You shall have no other gods before Me" (Exodus 20:3).

Key Scriptures

"Jacob said to his household and to all who were with him, 'Put away the foreign gods that are among you'" (Genesis 35:2, ESV).

"Joshua said to all the people, 'Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, "Your fathers lived of old beyond the Euphrates, Terah, the father of Abraham and of Nahor; and they served other gods"'" (Joshua 24:2, ESV).

"Are there not many gods and many lords?" (1 Corinthians 8:5, ESV) — Paul acknowledges polytheism's prevalence while affirming monotheistic truth.

Application

Believers must examine their hearts for any competing allegiances that rival Christ's lordship, remembering that exclusive devotion to God alone pleases Him.
