Phinehas

Phinehas was a priest in Israel during the wilderness period, known for his zealous action that stopped a plague and earned him an eternal covenant of peace. His example demonstrates righteous zeal for God's holiness and the consequences of sin within the community.

Overview

Phinehas was the son of Eleazar and grandson of Aaron, serving as a priest among Israel. During Israel's rebellion at Peor, when the people committed sexual immorality and idolatry, Phinehas executed swift judgment against a prominent Israelite and his Midianite companion, stopping a plague that had killed 24,000 people. His zealous action pleased the Lord and secured an everlasting covenant of peace for him and his descendants.
