Philip

Philip was one of the twelve apostles chosen by Jesus Christ to follow Him and participate in His earthly ministry. He is mentioned in the Gospel accounts and the early church in Acts.

Overview

Philip was called by Jesus to be one of His twelve apostles. He appears consistently in the Gospel lists of the apostles and was present with the other disciples throughout Jesus's ministry and after His resurrection. Little is recorded about Philip's individual actions during Jesus's earthly ministry, but he was part of the inner circle of those who witnessed Christ's teachings and miracles firsthand.

Key Scriptures

"Jesus called his twelve disciples together and gave them authority to cast out evil spirits and to heal every kind of disease and illness" (Matthew 10:1, NLT). "These are the names of the twelve apostles: first, Simon (also called Peter), then Andrew, James son of Zebedee, John, Philip, Bartholomew, Thomas, Matthew the tax collector, James son of Alphaeus, Thaddaeus, Simon the zealot, and Judas Iscariot" (Matthew 10:2-4, NLT). "All these with one accord were devoting themselves to prayer, together with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and his brothers" (Acts 1:14, ESV).

Application

Philip's faithful presence among the apostles reminds believers that consistent discipleship, even without prominence, plays a vital role in God's kingdom work.
