Study Notes — Mark 6
7 sectionsMark chapter 6 presents Jesus amid rejection and opportunity, demonstrating both the limits of unbelief and the limitlessness of His power. Beginning with His rejection in His hometown, the passage moves to His commissioning of the twelve apostles, then shifts to the murder of John the Baptist, and concludes with two spectacular miracles—the feeding of the five thousand and walking on water. Throughout these episodes, we see the tension between human doubt and divine authority, and the compassion of Christ toward those who have lost their spiritual leadership.
Jesus returns to Nazareth, His childhood home, and teaches in the synagogue on the Sabbath. The people are initially astonished at His wisdom and mighty works (v. 2), but their amazement quickly turns to offense. They know His family—He is "the carpenter, the son of Mary" with brothers James, Joses, Judas, and Simon, and sisters among them (v. 3). Their familiarity breeds contempt. Jesus responds with the timeless principle: "A prophet is not without honour, but in his own country, and among his own kin, and in his own house" (v. 4). Remarkably, Mark records that Jesus "could there do no mighty work, save that he laid his hands upon a few sick folk, and healed them" (v. 5). This is not because Jesus lacked power, but because their unbelief created a spiritual barrier. Jesus "marvelled because of their unbelief" (v. 6)—the only time in the Gospels where Jesus is amazed. Unbelief grieves the heart of Christ and limits the work He desires to accomplish.
Undeterred by rejection, Jesus calls the twelve and sends them out "by two and two" with power over unclean spirits (v. 7). His instructions are striking: take no provisions except a staff and sandals, no money, no bread, no extra clothing (vv. 8–9). This radical simplicity teaches dependence on God's provision and the priority of their message over material comfort. They are instructed to lodge in homes that receive them, and to shake dust from their feet against those who reject them—a serious act signifying that town's accountability before God (v. 11). The apostles obey: they preach repentance, cast out demons, anoint the sick with oil, and heal many (vv. 12–13). Faith produces action, and obedience releases divine power.
News of Jesus spreads, and King Herod becomes convinced that Jesus is John the Baptist risen from the dead (v. 14). Mark then provides the tragic backstory: Herod had imprisoned John because John rebuked him for marrying his brother Philip's wife, Herodias (vv. 17–18). Herodias harbored murderous hatred, but Herod feared John as a righteous man and actually respected him (v. 20). At Herod's birthday feast, Herodias's daughter dances and pleases the king, who rashly swears to give her whatever she asks. Manipulated by her mother, she requests John's head (v. 25). Bound by his oath and his pride before his guests, Herod orders the execution (vv. 26–27). John's disciples retrieve his body and bury him (v. 29). This tragic narrative shows how unguarded words, worldly temptation, and the fear of man's judgment can lead even a king into grave sin.
The apostles return and report all they have done (v. 30). Jesus invites them to rest in a desert place, but crowds follow by foot from all the cities (vv. 32–33). Jesus's response is compassion: "they were as sheep not having a shepherd" (v. 34). When the disciples suggest sending the crowds away hungry, Jesus commands them to give food (v. 37). With only five loaves and two fishes, Jesus blesses the food, breaks it, and miraculously feeds about five thousand men, with twelve baskets of fragments remaining (vv. 41–44). This demonstrates Jesus as the true Shepherd who provides abundantly for His flock.
Jesus sends the disciples ahead by ship and goes to the mountain to pray (vv. 45–46). In the fourth watch of the night, the wind is contrary, and Jesus walks toward them on the sea (vv. 47–48). The disciples, terrified, think He is a spirit (v. 49). Jesus immediately reassures them: "Be of good cheer: it is I; be not afraid" (v. 50). He enters the ship, the wind ceases, and the disciples are amazed beyond measure (v. 51). Yet Mark notes their spiritual dullness: "they considered not the miracle of the loaves: for their heart was hardened" (v. 52). Miracles do not automatically produce faith; spiritual perception requires an open heart.
Crossing to Gennesaret, Jesus is immediately recognized. People bring their sick in beds, begging
