Study Notes — Luke 6
7 sectionsLuke chapter 6 presents a pivotal portrait of Jesus as the supreme authority over religious tradition and the lawgiver of a radical kingdom ethic. Beginning with conflict over Sabbath observance, Jesus demonstrates that He is "Lord also of the sabbath" (v. 5)—a bold claim to deity that foreshadows the coming cross. The chapter then moves to the calling of the twelve apostles and the famous Sermon on the Plain, where Jesus pronounces blessings on the poor and suffering, pronounces woes on the self-satisfied, and teaches His disciples to love their enemies and live by grace rather than by human judgment. Throughout, the theme is clear: true discipleship means following the King of the kingdom, not the rules of human religion.
Jesus and His disciples walk through grain fields on the Sabbath, and the disciples pluck ears of corn to eat (v. 1). The Pharisees immediately object, claiming this violates Sabbath law (v. 2). Jesus responds by citing the precedent of David, who ate the showbread—reserved for priests alone—when hungry (vv. 3–4). This reference shows that human need supersedes ceremonial restriction when properly weighed. Most significantly, Jesus concludes with an earth-shaking declaration: "That the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath" (v. 5). He is not merely interpreting the law; He is claiming authority over the law itself. This is a claim to be God, for God alone instituted the Sabbath. The Pharisees' external, mechanical observance had become a burden rather than a blessing, and Jesus redirects attention to mercy and the glory of His person.
In the synagogue on another Sabbath, Jesus encounters a man with a withered hand (v. 6). The scribes and Pharisees are watching—hoping to catch Him healing on the Sabbath so they can accuse Him (v. 7). Jesus, knowing their hostile thoughts (v. 8), directly challenges their logic: "Is it lawful on the sabbath days to do good, or to do evil? to save life, or to destroy it?" (v. 9). The answer is obvious. He then heals the man with a single command (v. 10). The Pharisees respond not with repentance but with rage—they are "filled with madness" and plot against Him (v. 11). This passage shows that true Sabbath observance honors God by doing good, not by rigid prohibition. It also reveals the hardness of human hearts: even a miracle of mercy cannot soften those determined to resist Jesus.
Before selecting His apostles, Jesus spends the entire night in prayer (v. 12)—a model of dependence on the Father. He then calls twelve men by name, including Simon Peter, James, John, Matthew, and Judas Iscariot, "which also was the traitor" (vv. 13–16). Luke's sobering note about Judas reminds us that even intimate association with Jesus does not guarantee faith. Jesus then descends with them to a plain where vast multitudes gather—people from Judea, Jerusalem, and the Phoenician coast—seeking healing (vv. 17–18). The power of Jesus is manifest: the unclean spirits flee, diseases vanish, and virtue flows from Him to heal all who touch Him (v. 19). This display of compassion and power establishes Jesus' credentials as the promised Messiah.
Jesus now addresses His disciples directly with the Beatitudes (vv. 20–23): blessed are the poor, the hungry, the weeping, and the persecuted, for theirs is the kingdom of God and a great reward in heaven. He then pronounces woes on the rich, the full, the laughing, and the popular (vv. 24–26). These are not arbitrary curses but warnings: those who find their satisfaction in earthly comfort have already "received [their] consolation" and will face judgment. The kingdom Jesus brings inverts worldly values.
Jesus commands radical love: "Love your enemies, do good to them which hate you" (v. 27). He calls disciples to bless their cursers, pray for their abusers, turn the other cheek, give generously, and lend without hope of return (vv. 28–30). The reason is stunning: God Himself "is kind unto the unthankful and to the evil" (v. 35). Mercy, not judgment, defines the kingdom (v. 36).
Jesus warns against judging others (v. 37), teaches the law of reciprocity (v. 38), and uses vivid parables—the blind leading the blind, the beam in one's own eye, trees known by their fruit (vv. 39–44)—to show that the heart determines the mouth and the life (v. 45). The chapter closes with the parable of two builders: one hears and obeys, building on
