Obadiah

Obadiah is both a short prophetic book of the Old Testament and the name of several faithful servants of God in biblical history. The book of Obadiah pronounces God's judgment against Edom for its pride and mistreatment of Israel.

Overview

Obadiah is the shortest book in the Old Testament, containing a single chapter of divine prophecy against the nation of Edom. The book addresses Edom's arrogance, violence against Judah during Jerusalem's destruction, and their future judgment. Additionally, the name Obadiah (meaning "servant of the LORD") was borne by multiple godly figures throughout Israel's history, including temple officials, judges, and administrators who served faithfully during the reigns of various kings.

Key Scriptures

"The vision of Obadiah. Thus says the Lord God concerning Edom" (Obadiah 1:1, ESV). "For the day of the Lord is near upon all the nations. As you have done, it shall be done to you; your deeds shall return on your own head" (Obadiah 1:15, ESV). "Then the kingdom shall belong to the Lord" (Obadiah 1:21, NASB).

Application

Trust that God's judgment against pride and injustice is certain, and align yourself with His kingdom purposes through humble obedience and service.
