Overview
The Pharisees were influential Jewish leaders who emphasized meticulous observance of the Torah and rabbinic traditions. However, Jesus exposed their fundamental spiritual problem: external righteousness masking internal corruption. They opposed His teaching, demanded signs, and ultimately rejected Him as the Messiah, becoming primary obstacles to the gospel's acceptance.
