Amorites, the

The Amorites were a powerful Canaanite people whose defeat by Israel demonstrates God's sovereignty over nations and His faithfulness to His promises.

Who Were the Amorites?

The Amorites were one of the most prominent peoples inhabiting the Promised Land when Israel arrived. Genesis 10:16 identifies them as descendants of Canaan, making them part of the broader Canaanite population that God had marked for judgment. They were not merely a small tribe but a significant civilization that controlled much territory on both sides of the Jordan River.

Numbers 13:29 reveals their strategic importance: "The Amalekites dwell in the land of the South; the Hittites, the Jebusites, and the Amorites dwell in the mountains; and the Canaanites dwell by the sea and along the banks of the Jordan." The Amorites occupied the mountainous regions, making them a formidable obstacle to Israel's conquest of the land God had promised to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

God's Judgment Upon the Amorites

The defeat of the Amorites was not arbitrary but part of God's righteous judgment. In Genesis 15:16, God told Abraham that his descendants would not inherit the land immediately because "the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet complete." This remarkable statement shows God's patience and justice—He waited centuries before bringing judgment, giving the Amorites time to repent.

When Israel finally entered the land, God demonstrated His power through miraculous victories. Joshua 10:11-12 records how God fought for Israel against the Amorite coalition, hurling great hailstones from heaven and even making the sun stand still so Joshua could complete the victory. Judges 1:34-36 shows that while Israel achieved great success, some Amorites remained in the land, continuing to be a source of conflict.

Lessons for Today's Believers

The account of the Amorites teaches us profound truths about God's character and His dealings with humanity. First, we see God's patience—He waited 400 years before bringing judgment, demonstrating that He is "not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance" (2 Peter 3:9). Second, we witness God's faithfulness to His promises. Despite seemingly impossible odds, God gave Israel victory over these mighty peoples because He had sworn an oath to their forefathers.

For believers today, the Amorites represent the spiritual strongholds we face in our Christian walk. Just as God fought for Israel and gave them victory over seemingly insurmountable enemies, He promises to give us victory over sin and spiritual opposition when we trust in Him and obey His word.

And the Lord said to Joshua: "Do not fear them, for I have delivered them into your hand; not a man of them shall stand before you" (Joshua 10:8).
