Overview
Treason involves betraying a ruler, nation, or sacred trust. The Bible presents treason as rebellion against God's ordained authority (Romans 13:1-2). Whether through political conspiracy or personal betrayal, treason carries severe earthly and spiritual consequences, yet God's grace extends even to traitors who genuinely repent.
Key Scriptures
"Now Shimei the son of Gera fell on his face before the king, as he went to the Jordan. And he said to the king, 'Let not my lord hold me guilty or remember how your servant did wrong on the day when my lord the king left Jerusalem'" (2 Samuel 19:18-19, ESV).
"The king said, 'Is Shimei still alive?' And the king swore to him, 'You shall not die'" (2 Samuel 19:23, ESV).
The soldiers also mocked him, saying, 'If you are the King of the Jews, save yourself' (Luke 23:37, NIV).
Application
Christians must remain loyal to lawful authorities while maintaining ultimate allegiance to Christ, understanding that God judges all betrayal and rewards faithfulness.
