Study Notes — Luke 23
7 sectionsLuke 23 records the trial, crucifixion, and burial of Jesus Christ—the central event of human history and the foundation of Christian salvation. The chapter chronicles Jesus's appearance before Pilate and Herod, the mockery He endured, His crucifixion between two criminals, and His words of forgiveness and hope even in death. Throughout this passage, Luke emphasizes both the injustice of Christ's condemnation and the sovereignty of God working through these events to accomplish redemption. This chapter is the climax of the Gospel narrative and deserves our deepest reflection and gratitude.
The Jewish council brings Jesus before Pontius Pilate, the Roman governor, with carefully crafted charges designed to appeal to Roman concerns: that Jesus perverts the nation, forbids tribute to Caesar, and claims to be a king. These accusations distort Jesus's actual teachings. Pilate, upon initial examination, finds no fault in Him (v. 4). The religious leaders intensify their accusations, citing His teaching throughout Galilee and Judea. This reveals the pattern of false testimony throughout Jesus's trial—the charges are political, not genuinely religious, and they misrepresent His kingdom as an earthly rebellion.
When Pilate learns Jesus is from Galilee, he sends Him to Herod Antipas, the tetrarch of Galilee who was in Jerusalem at that time. Herod has long desired to see Jesus perform a miracle, but Jesus remains silent before him (v. 9). Herod and his soldiers mock Jesus, dress Him in a gorgeous robe, and send Him back to Pilate. Remarkably, this shared mockery of the innocent Christ creates a friendship between Pilate and Herod, who had previously been enemies (v. 12). Even human enmity is overcome through their common rejection of the Son of God.
Pilate assembles the council, rulers, and people to announce his findings: Jesus is innocent of the charges against Him. He proposes to chastise Jesus mildly and release Him, but the crowd demands the release of Barabbas, a seditious murderer, instead. Three times Pilate declares Jesus's innocence (vv. 4, 14-15, 22), yet the people's voices prevail. Pilate, willing to release Jesus (v. 20) but lacking moral courage, capitulates to the mob. This is a sobering reminder that truth and justice do not always triumph when human will opposes them—yet God's eternal purposes were not thwarted.
Simon of Cyrene is compelled to carry Jesus's cross. A great company follows, including women who lament Him. Jesus turns and speaks to them (vv. 28-31), warning them not to weep for Him but for themselves and their children. His cryptic words—"if they do these things in a green tree, what shall be done in the dry?"—foretell Jerusalem's coming judgment in A.D. 70. Even on the way to His execution, Christ's concern is for others' spiritual fate.
At Calvary, Jesus is crucified with two criminals. His prayer—"Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do" (v. 34)—demonstrates His sacrificial heart even in agony. Rulers and soldiers mock Him, demanding He save Himself. The inscription declares, "THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS." One criminal repents and asks Jesus to remember him; Jesus promises him, "To day shalt thou be with me in paradise" (v. 43). At the sixth hour, darkness covers the land until the ninth hour. Jesus commends His spirit to the Father and dies (v. 46). The veil of the temple is torn, symbolizing the removal of separation between God and humanity.
A centurion, witnessing these events, glorifies God and declares Jesus righteous (v. 47). Joseph of Arimathea, a council member who dissented from the plot against Jesus, respectfully buries Him in a new, unused tomb. The women who followed from Galilee observe the burial and rest on the Sabbath, prepared to anoint Him after the Sabbath's end.
Luke 23 calls us to profound gratitude for Christ's willing sacrifice and to examine our own faithfulness. Like Pilate, do we sometimes know the truth yet lack courage to defend it? Like the thief on the cross, are we willing to acknowledge our sin and trust Christ's grace? Our Savior died innocent so guilty sinners could be forgiven. Let this move us to worship, repentance, and bold witness.
