Tongue

The tongue represents human language and communication, which God sovereignly governs. Scripture reveals both the confusion of tongues at Babel and the miraculous gift of speaking in tongues at Pentecost.

Overview

God created human language and maintains authority over it. At Babel, God confused human tongues to scatter people across the earth, demonstrating His control over human speech and ambition. In contrast, at Pentecost, the Holy Spirit empowered believers to speak in other tongues, enabling the gospel's proclamation across language barriers and authenticating the apostolic message.

Key Scriptures

"Now the whole earth had one language and the same words" (Genesis 11:1, ESV). "So the Lord scattered them abroad from there over the face of all the earth, and they left off building the city. Therefore its name was called Babel, because there the Lord confused the language of all the earth" (Genesis 11:8-9, ESV). "And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance" (Acts 2:4, ESV).

Application

Recognize that your words are a gift from God to be used for His glory and the advancement of His kingdom, whether in daily conversation or gospel witness.
