Ziklag

Ziklag was a city in southern Judah that served as a refuge for David during his exile from King Saul, and later became an important administrative center in his kingdom.

Overview

Ziklag was located in the Negev region of Judah (Joshua 15:31) and was initially assigned to the tribe of Simeon (Joshua 19:5). When David fled from Saul's persecution, he requested Ziklag from Achish, king of Gath, as a place of refuge (1 Samuel 27:5-6). David used Ziklag as his base for approximately sixteen months while conducting raids and building his military following. After Saul's death, Ziklag remained significant in David's reign, with warriors from various tribes joining him there (1 Chronicles 12:1), and it was resettled after the Babylonian exile (Nehemiah 11:28).

Key Scriptures

"Then David said to Achish, 'If I have found favor in your eyes, let a place be given to me in one of the country towns, that I may dwell there'" (1 Samuel 27:5, ESV). "So Achish gave him Ziklag that day" (1 Samuel 27:6, ESV). "When David came to Ziklag, he found that the Amalekites had made a raid on the Negev" (1 Samuel 30:1, ESV).

Application

Consider how God often preserves His people in unlikely places and uses seasons of exile to strengthen faith and develop leadership for future service.
