Rephaim

The Rephaim were a race of giants who inhabited Canaan and surrounding regions before and during Israel's conquest. Though physically imposing, they were defeated by God's people, demonstrating His power over seemingly insurmountable obstacles.

Overview

The Rephaim were an ancient giant people dwelling in Canaan and the Transjordan region. They appear throughout Israel's history as formidable inhabitants whom God enabled the Israelites to overcome. Notable Rephaim include King Og of Bashan, whose iron bedstead was preserved as evidence of their great stature.

Key Scriptures

"In the fourteenth year Chedorlaomer and the kings allied with him came and defeated the Rephaim in Ashteroth Karnaim" (Genesis 14:5, NIV).

"The Rephaim also lived there formerly (though the Ammonites call them Zamzummim)" (Deuteronomy 2:20, ESV).

"Only Og king of Bashan was left of the remnant of the Rephaim. Behold, his bed was a bed of iron" (Deuteronomy 3:11, ESV).

Application

Like Israel facing giants in Canaan, believers can trust that no obstacle—no matter how intimidating—is too great when we rely on God's strength and promises.
