Nicodemus

Nicodemus was a Pharisee and ruler of the Jews who encountered Jesus at night, seeking spiritual truth. Though initially confused about being born again, he later defended Jesus and helped prepare His body for burial.

Overview

Nicodemus appears three times in John's gospel as a seeker who progressed from curiosity to faith. As a respected Jewish leader, he came to Jesus by night, perhaps fearing social consequences. Jesus's teaching on spiritual rebirth challenged his understanding of God's kingdom, establishing that physical descent and religious works cannot substitute for genuine spiritual transformation through faith in Christ.

Key Scriptures

"Jesus answered and said to him, 'Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God'" (John 3:3, NASB).

"Jesus answered, 'Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit he cannot enter into the kingdom of God'" (John 3:5, NASB).

"Nicodemus said to them (he who came to Him before, being one of them), 'Our law does not judge a man unless it first hears from him and knows what he is doing, does it?'" (John 7:50-51, NASB).

Application

Like Nicodemus, examine whether your faith rests on tradition and personal righteousness or on genuine spiritual rebirth through faith in Christ alone.
