Overview
The Praetorium (also spelled Pretorium) was the official administrative building and residence of the Roman governor in Jerusalem. It served as the seat of judicial authority where Pontius Pilate presided over trials and maintained Roman military control. Jesus was brought to this location following His arrest, where He faced interrogation and ultimately received His death sentence.
Key Scriptures
"Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the Praetorium and gathered the whole battalion before him" (Matthew 27:27, ESV).
"Then Jesus was led into the Praetorium. And they clothed him in a purple cloak, and twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on him" (Mark 15:16, ESV).
"Then they led Jesus from Caiaphas to the Praetorium. It was early morning. They themselves did not enter the Praetorium, so that they would not be defiled, but could eat the Passover" (John 18:28, ESV).
Application
Reflect on Christ's humiliation before earthly powers and His willing submission to injustice, trusting in God's sovereign plan for redemption.
