Study Notes — Mark 15
7 sectionsMark chapter 15 stands as the gospel's climactic account of Jesus' trial, crucifixion, and burial. Here we witness the collision between the kingdom of God and the kingdoms of this world as Jesus, the innocent King, is condemned to death by human injustice and carried out the sentence of crucifixion. This chapter fulfills Old Testament prophecy, demonstrates Jesus' silent dignity under accusation, and reveals the paradox of the cross: apparent defeat becomes eternal victory. Through Mark's stark, unflinching narrative, we encounter the substitutionary death of Christ and its immediate spiritual significance.
The religious leadership waste no time. Early in the morning, the chief priests, elders, scribes, and the entire Sanhedrin hold a consultation, bind Jesus, and deliver Him to Pilate, the Roman governor. Pilate's question—"Art thou the King of the Jews?"—cuts to the political charge. Jesus' response, "Thou sayest it," is neither a denial nor an unambiguous affirmation, but rather a measured acknowledgment weighted with deeper meaning. When the chief priests layer accusations upon Him (v. 3), Jesus offers no defense. His silence astounds Pilate (v. 5). This is not the silence of guilt but of sovereign purpose. Jesus does not argue for His innocence because His mission transcends mere vindication; He came to bear the sins of the world, not to defend Himself. His restraint reveals His willingness to walk the path of the cross.
Pilate, sensing Jesus' innocence and perceiving the chief priests' envy (v. 10), offers the crowds a choice: release Jesus or Barabbas, a murderer and insurrectionist. The crowds, moved by the priests' manipulation, demand Barabbas. Pilate asks repeatedly what evil Jesus has done, but the cry only grows louder: "Crucify him!" In a moment of moral weakness, Pilate capitulates. He releases a guilty man and delivers an innocent man to crucifixion. This exchange foreshadows the gospel's heart: the guilty go free while the innocent bears punishment—a picture of substitutionary atonement. Jesus takes the place of Barabbas; He takes our place.
Roman soldiers, gathering the whole cohort, subject Jesus to brutal mockery. They clothe Him in purple (a sign of royalty), crown Him with thorns, and bow mockingly before Him, hailing Him as "King of the Jews." They strike His head with a reed and spit upon Him (vv. 17-19). What they intended as ridicule becomes an unwitting proclamation of truth. The King does wear a crown; He is worthy of worship. After this humiliation, they lead Him to Golgotha.
Simon of Cyrene is compelled to carry Jesus' cross. At Golgotha (v. 22), Jesus refuses wine mixed with myrrh—a merciful anaesthetic—maintaining full consciousness for His redemptive work. The soldiers crucify Him and cast lots for His garments, fulfilling Psalm 22:18. At the third hour (9 a.m.), Jesus is crucified between two thieves, yet another fulfillment of Isaiah 53:12—numbered with transgressors.
Passersby, chief priests, and scribes all mock Him (vv. 29-32), unaware that His refusal to "come down from the cross" is precisely His salvation of the world. At the sixth hour, darkness covers the land. At the ninth hour (3 p.m.), Jesus cries out in Aramaic: "Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?"—"My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?" (v. 34). This is not doubt but the deepest moment of atonement: the Son experiences separation from the Father as He bears sin's penalty. With a loud cry, He gives up His spirit (v. 37). At that instant, the temple veil tears from top to bottom (v. 38)—God's way open to all humanity through Christ's blood.
The centurion, witnessing Jesus' death, confesses, "Truly this man was the Son of God" (v. 39). Joseph of Arimathaea, a secret believer, boldly requests the body, wraps it in fine linen, and places it in a tomb hewn from rock. The faithful women watch and remember—preparations already being made for resurrection hope.
Mark's passion narrative invites us to contemplate the costliness of our redemption. Jesus' silent submission, His refusal of escape, and His cry of abandonment show us a Savior who loves us unto death. We are called not to defend ourselves as He did not, but to trust the Father's purposes. The torn veil reminds us that access to God is open; the centurion's confession reminds us that faith comes through witnessing Christ's sacrifice. Let us live in gratitude for grace purchased at such a price.
