Penitent

A penitent person is one who genuinely repents of sin, turning from wickedness and returning to God with a humble and contrite heart. Biblical penitence involves confession, restitution, and a decisive commitment to follow God's ways.

Overview

Penitence is more than mere sorrow for sin; it is a complete turning around (repentance) that involves acknowledging wrongdoing, making restitution where possible, and committing to obedience. God promises to hear and restore those who genuinely seek Him with all their heart, even after rebellion and failure.

Key Scriptures

"But if they confess their iniquity and the iniquity of their fathers in their treachery that they committed against me...then I will remember my covenant" (Leviticus 26:40-42, ESV).

"When you are in distress and all these things have come upon you, then in the latter days you will return to the Lord your God and obey his voice. For the Lord your God is a merciful God. He will not leave you or destroy you" (Deuteronomy 4:30-31, ESV).

"And the Lord your God will circumcise your heart and the heart of your offspring, so that you love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul" (Deuteronomy 30:6, ESV).

Application

If you have strayed from God, return to Him today through sincere repentance, knowing He delights in mercy toward those who genuinely seek His face.
