Overview
Megiddo occupied a crucial position controlling trade routes in northern Israel. It served as a garrison city under Solomon's administration (1 Kings 4:12) and was fortified by him (1 Kings 9:15). The city witnessed significant military engagements, including battles during the judges' period (Judges 5:19) and notably the death of King Josiah during conflict with Egypt (2 Kings 23:29-30).
Key Scriptures
"So Solomon built Gezer and Lower Beth-horon and Baalath and Tamar in the wilderness, in the land of Judah, and all the storage cities that Solomon had, and cities for his chariots, and cities for his horsemen, and whatever Solomon desired to build in Jerusalem, in Lebanon, and in all the land of his dominion" (1 Kings 9:17-19, ESV).
"King Josiah went out to meet him, but Neco killed him at Megiddo" (2 Kings 23:29b, ESV).
Application
Megiddo reminds us that God's sovereignty extends over nations' strategic affairs and that earthly power ultimately rests in His hands.
